HARRISBURG 89, OUR SAVIOR NEW AMERICAN 72

Cougars not scared off by 7-footers

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Harrisburg boys' basketball coach Kirk Smallwood acknowledged that the Cougars are beginning to hit their groove.

Yesterday at the Battle by the Bay Shootout, the Cougars proved their coach prophetic.

The Cougars stretched their unbeaten string to 21 games by running past highly-touted Our Savior New American, out of New York City, 89-72.

Laron Williams poured in 12 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter as the Cougars roared to a 26-12 lead entering the second stanza.

After Our Savior New American, which sported two players over 7 feet , stormed back to knot the score at 44 at the intermission, Ricardo Brown, Williams and Lamar Drayton combined for 20 of Harrisburg's 26 points in the third quarter to take command of the contest. Bryan Majors converted 6-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter to aid the Cougars.

"They were by far the biggest team we've played," Smallwood said. "Our game plan was to keep their players in front of us, get into the passing lanes and be efficient in the half-court game.

"We did a lot of things well today, and now we can build on the experience. We have to stay humble, work hard, prove it [we're an elite team] everytime on the court."

Drayton finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Alphonso Dawson added 14 points, six boards and four assists and Brown chipped in 13 points for Harrisburg.

The Cougars, who went 10 deep, received six boards from Zach Runkle and three rebounds and three assists from Quincy Roberts.

Harrisburg shot over 50 percent from the floor, dished 18 assists, had only 12 turnovers and held a 41-32 rebounding edge.

We do what we do," Smallwood said.

Our Savior New American, which plays games all over the country, was led by Tim Ambrose with 22 points. Tyvon Williams added 19 points, including five treys, Daye Kaba, a Boston College recruit, tallied 14 points and Rio Pitt (Stony Brook) scored 10.
