W.P.I.A.L. BOYS PLAYOFF PICTURE
2/9/2006 -

With less than a week left in the WPIAL boy’s basketball regular season, 66 teams have already clinched a postseason berth. However there are still as many as 14 playoff spots up for grabs. Here is a section-by-section look at the WPIAL boy’s basketball playoff picture.

CLASS AAAA Section 1:

* Norwin (11-2), Connellsville (10-3), Hempfield (10-3) and Albert Gallatin (6-7) are all in
* Norwin has clinched at least a share of the section title and can win it outright with a victory at Penn-Trafford on Friday OR a Connellsville loss to Hempfield on Friday
* Kiski Area (5-8) can qualify for the playoffs IF they win at home against Latrobe on Friday AND Albert Gallatin loses at Uniontown on Friday

CLASS AAAA Section 2:

* McKeesport (11-2), Baldwin (9-4), Pittsburgh Central Catholic (9-4) and Plum (9-4) are all in
* McKeesport has clinched the section title

CLASS AAAA Section 3:

* North Allegheny (10-3), Fox Chapel (9-4) and Shaler (8-5) are all in
* North Allegheny has clinched at least a share of the section title and can win it outright with a victory at North Hills on Friday OR a Fox Chapel loss at Shaler on Friday
* The winner of the Butler at New Castle game on Friday will clinch the final playoff spot

CLASS AAAA Section 4:

* Bethel Park (12-1), Mount Lebanon (10-3), Upper St. Clair (9-4) and Chartiers Valley (9-4) are all in
* Bethel Park has clinched the section title


CLASS AAA Section 1:

* Hampton (11-1), Highlands (8-3), Knoch (7-4) and Valley (6-5) are all in
* Hampton has clinched the section title
* IF Mars (5-6) wins at Knoch on Friday PLUS if Valley loses at Deer Lakes on Friday, then Mars would also clinch a playoff spot

CLASS AAA Section 2:

* Hopewell (10-1), Moon (8-3), Blackhawk (8-3) and Ambridge (6-5) are all in
* Hopewell has clinched the section title

CLASS AAA Section 3:

* Laurel Highlands (12-1), Greensburg-Salem (11-2) and Mount Pleasant (8-5) are all in
* Laurel Highlands has clinched at least a share of the section title and can win it outright with a win against Belle Vernon on Friday OR a Greenburg-Salem loss to Brownsville on Friday
* Derry (6-7) and Yough (6-7) are tied for the final playoff spot. IF they end up tied, both teams will clinch after splitting two games head-to-head
* Derry is home to Indiana on Friday while Yough is at Mount Pleasant
* IF Indiana (5-8) beats Derry PLUS Yough loses to Mount Pleasant, Derry, Yough and Indiana will all qualify for the playoffs

CLASS AAA Section 4:

* Elizabeth Forward (12-1), Thomas Jefferson (9-4) and South Park (9-4) are all in
* Elizabeth Forward has clinched the section title
* Steel Valley (8-5) and West Mifflin (8-5) are still alive for the postseason
* Steel Valley is at Elizabeth Forward on Friday
* West Mifflin is home to Thomas Jefferson on Friday
* If Steel Valley and West Mifflin both win OR both lose on Friday, they will each clinch a playoff spot


CLASS AA Section 1:

* Jeannette (13-0), Greensburg Central Catholic (12-1) and Burrell (9-4) are all in
* Jeannette has clinched at least a share of the section title and can win it outright with a victory at Greensburg Central Catholic on Friday
* Freeport (6-7) and West Shamokin (6-7) are still alive for a playoff spot. IF they tie, both teams will clinch after splitting two games this season
* Freeport is home to Ford City on Friday
* West Shamokin is at Apollo-Ridge on Friday

CLASS AA Section 2:

* Shenango (10-1), Farrell (9-3), Mohawk (8-3) and Riverside (4-7) are all in
* Shenango has clinched the section title
* The winner of the Summit Academy (3-8) at Neshannock (3-8) game on Friday will clinch a playoff berth IF Riverside loses when they host Mohawk on Friday

CLASS AA Section 3:

* Bishop Canevin (9-2), Quaker Valley (9-3), South Fayette (8-3) and Brentwood (6-5) are all in
* Bishop Canevin has clinched at least a share of the section title and can win it outright with a victory over Carlynton on Friday

CLASS AA Section 4:

* Shady Side Academy (10-1), Wilkinsburg (8-3), North Catholic (8-4) and Northgate (7-4) are all in
* Shady Side Academy has clinched the section title

CLASS AA Section 5:

* Burgettstown (10-1), Washington (9-2), Southmoreland (8-4) and Charleroi (6-5) are all in
* Burgettstown has clinched at least a share of the section title and can win it outright with a victory over Fort Cherry on Friday OR a Washington loss at Charleroi on Friday

CLASS AA Section 6:

* Aliquippa (13-0), Beaver Falls (11-2), Center (10-3) and South Side Beaver (5-8) are all in
* Aliquippa has clinched the section title
* Beaver is 7-6 and will finish in 4th place. Because of a co-op with a charter school, Beaver is technically a Class AAA school only eligible for the Class AAA playoffs. However because they did not finish in the Top 3 of their section, the Bobcats do not qualify for the Class AAA postseason.


CLASS A Section 1:

* Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (9-2), Western Beaver (8-3), Monaca (7-4) and Sewickley Academy (7-4) are all in
* OLSH has clinched a share of the section title and can win it outright with a victory at Union on Friday OR a Western Beaver loss at Monaca on Friday

CLASS A Section 2:

* Geibel (9-2), Carmichaels (9-2), California (8-3) and Avella (6-6) are all in
* Geibel and Carmichaels are tied for the section lead. Geibel is at California on Friday while Carmichaels is at West Greene on Friday
* Mapletown (5-6) can clinch a playoff spot with a victory at Jefferson-Morgan on Friday

CLASS A Section 3:

* Serra Catholic (10-0), Clairton (7-3), Monessen (7-3) and Frazier (4-6) are all in
* Serra Catholic has clinched the section title

CLASS A Section 4:

* Duquesne (8-1), Vincentian Academy (6-3) and Leechburg (5-4) are all in
* Duquesne has clinched the section title
* Springdale (4-5) and St. Joseph (4-5) are still alive for a playoff spot. If the two teams tie, both will qualify for the postseason based on splitting against each other
* Springdale is at Duquesne on Friday
* St. Joseph is at Vincentian Academy on Friday
