Ramblers nudge Jays....

WINDBER —
The Windber boys overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit Friday night and the top-seeded Class A team for the District 6 basketball tournament, earning an emotional 68-67 victory over visiting Conemaugh Valley.
“I’m very proud,” Windber coach Kevin Charney said. “The key was our defense down the stretch. We didn’t give up, we stayed with our defense and got some steals at the end.”
Conemaugh Valley led 58-48 with 5:37 remaining on a Robert Gunby bucket. Windber kept chipping away at the Jays’ advantage as Matt Wilson hit two 3-pointers and Joe Swinger added another. Swinger pulled the Ramblers even at 62 on a layup at the 2-minute mark.
Three lead changes and two ties in the closing minutes saw Windber go ahead for good 68-66 on a Dan Gardner basket with 8.5 on the clock.
The Jays’ Vince Turner had a chance to tie the game with 2.1 seconds left, but missed the first of two free throws to set the final score.
“I’m very proud of our guys they didn’t back down when it looked gruesome there at the end, but we stuck it out and hung on,” Charney said, noting that the win over the Jays still gives the Ramblers an outside chance at a berth in the upcoming WestPAC championship on Feb. 18. “If Conemaugh Valley loses one more and we win out, then we’re in.”
The Jays (19-3) went up 16-11 after the first quarter on the strength of 11 of Gunby’s 20 points. Windber took over the lead in the second, outscoring Conemaugh Valley 18-11 for a 29-27 halftime advantage.
The visitors tied the contest at 33 on a pair of Gunby free throws at 5:38. Three lead changes and a pair of ties saw the Jays pull ahead 50-44 heading into the fourth.
Wilson finished with a team-high 23 points for the 18-4 Ramblers, 17 in the second half, while Gardner added 18. Turner led all scorers with 29 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds for Conemaugh Valley.
“The last two ball games we have not wrapped up a game properly and it came down to foul shooting, and that’s the part of the game that you work for,” Jay’s coach Garry Lupek said.
