College Men

Lake Erie 94, Mount Aloysius 71

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Reggie Richardson netted a game-high 31 points in Lake Erie’s win over Mount Aloysius.

Robert Williams had 16 points for Lake Erie while Chad Hunt and Darnell Campbell each scored 12 points.

Roman Mims led Mount Aloysius with 24 points, Jimmy Snyder scored 17 points and Sam Hanik added 15 for the Mounties.



Mezyk receives honor..............................

Westmont Hilltop graduate Scott Mezyk was one of three Bethany College men’s basketball players recognized Thursday on the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III Team.

To be eligible a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their current institution and be nominated by their sports information director. College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) voted on the 58 nominees.

The 5-foot-11 point guardis in his second season at Bethany after transferring from Pitt-Johnstown. Mezyk leads the conference with 4.1 assists per game this season. Mezyk also averages 9.4 points a game and is second in the PAC in three-point field goal percentage at 45.8 percent.

Mezyk has a 3.7 grade point average as an elementary education major.



College Women...............................

Anderson 103, Pitt-Johnstown 86

ANDERSON, S.C. – LaShonda Chiles led all scorers with 26 points in Anderson’s win over Pitt-Johnstown.

Deidra Langston had 20 points, Keana Boyd scored 17 points and Latrice Thomas scored 14.

Mikala Fogle-Wilson added 13 points and Genia Holbrook scored 11 for Anderson.

Jessica Zapf led Pitt-Johnstown with 24 points. Jami Oaks scored 23 points, including four 3-pointers, Crystal Andrews scored 16 points and Samantha Conner added 10 for the Lady Cats.



Lake Erie 77, Mount Aloysius 69..................................

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Sarah Miller led the Lake Erie scoring with 20 points in a win over Mount Aloysius.

Loni Sargent scored 18 points, Angela Bethel netted 14 points and Melissa Woods added 12 for the hosts.

Brianna Baker scored a game-high 25 points for Mount Aloysius and Ashley O’Shell scored 21 for the Mounties.

Windber 63, Somerset 60

WINDBER – Joe Dello converted a three-point play with 5.1 seconds left and the score tied at 60 to give Windber a win over Somerset.

Joe Swinger led Windber with 21 points, Matt Wilson scored 14 points and Josh Kotula added 10 for the Ramblers.

Conlan Walsh led Somerset with 18 points and Austin Ankney added 12 for the Golden Eagles.




Farrell 71, Bishop McCort 55........................................

FARRELL – Bobby Wright led Farrell with 22 points in a win over Bishop McCort.

Josh DeCarmen had 16 points, including four 3-pointers, Donald Jackson scored 11 points and Josh Williams added 10 for the Steelers.

Pete O’Connor led Bishop McCort with 19 points and Mike Cruz added 15 for the Crimson Crushers.

Bishop McCort 62, Farrell 52

FARRELL – Brittany Genday led Bishop McCort with 19 points in a win over Farrell.

Brooke Pioli scored 14 points, Marissa Basile scored 13 and Shannon Yingling added 10 for the Crimson Crushers.

Keveeda Myers led Farrell with 19 points and Jessica Robinson added 11 for the Steelers.

Reynolds dethrones Northern Lehigh

HERSHEY – Reynolds recorded three falls on Saturday as the Raiders routed defending champ Northern Lehigh in the Class AA finals of the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships.

Mason Stewart, Matt Dunn and Cody Kelly picked up pins in the finals for Reynolds, which lost to Northern Lehigh in the championship a year ago.

Reynolds (19-0) beat second-ranked Mount Pleasant 33-12 in the semifinals. Northern Lehigh (24-3) crushed previously unbeaten Boiling Springs 45-12.

In Class (AAA), Upper Perkiomen pounded Easton 46-19 behind falls from Brent Fiorito, Derek Bennett, Bruce Augustine, Shane Smith and Chris Sheetz.

Like Reynolds, Upper Perkiomen (29-1) captured its first dual-meet state title on Saturday. Easton (21-7) has won four titles but was not expected to reach the finals after finishing second in District #11.

Westmont athletes sign letters-of-intent

Westmont Hilltop student-athletes Max Khuri and Mark Rossi recently signed letters-of-intent to continue their respecitve football careers at the Division II level. Khuri will head to Mercyhurst College while Rossi will go to Shippensburg University.

Khuri had more than 1,000 yards receiving during his career with the Hilltoppers and leaves the program in second place on the career receptions and career touchdowns list.

Khuri, at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, also plays basketball and track during his time at Westmont. He was a second-team Tribune-Democrat selection at wide receiver this year.

Rossi, 6-3, 221 pounds, had to choose between several schools before deciding on Shippensburg. Offers also came from Robert Morris, Mercyhurst and Mansfield University. Rossi was named a second-team tight end on The Tribune-Democrat’s all-area squad this season. He caught 15 pass for 338 yards for the Hilltoppers this year and had eight sacks defensively.



Penn State will host coaching clinic...................................................................

Nittany Lions coach Joe Paterno will welcome several hundred coaches for Penn State’s annual football coaches clinic, set for April 7-8 on the University Park campus.

The clinic will feature lectures and demonstrations by Paterno and the entire Nittany Lions’ staff.

The clinic costs $50 per person.

Jennerstown sets registration dates

Jennerstown Speedway has scheduled a registration meeting for its competitors, which will enable them to purchase NASCAR licenses and receive information concerning the 2006 racing season.

The meeting will be held March 11 from 1-4 p.m. at the Jennerstown fire hall, on Rt. 30 West.

In addition to purchasing licenses, competitors will also be able to obtain copies of the rule book and schedule, as well as reserve pit stalls. The speedway will have tech officials on hand to answer any questions concerning newly implemented car specifications.

M.A.A.R.A. announces procedure for races...................................................................

The Mid-Atlantic Asphalt Racing Alliance (M.A.A.R.A.) has announced its race procedure and point fund structure for the 2006 season.

The newly-founded series will run extra-distance races at its five member tracks, including local venues Motordrome Speedway and Jennerstown Speedway.

All drivers will qualify through heat races, with the top 12 finishers transferring to the feature event.

MAARA also announced that it is posting a minimum $12,000 point fund for the initial campaign. The champion will receive $2,000 while 26th place will pay $200. All legal ASA late model series cars and drivers are also eligible to compete in the five MAARA events.
