Bonds-O
You've just made one HUGE point. Why just take it out on Bonds? This is 100% MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL's fault. They let it get to the way that was and they're gonna try to make Barry the fall guy in this entire situation. If you put a * beside all his stats, you've gotta do that for Big Mac and Slammin' Sammy and all the others that MIGHT have used those substances. They CAN NOT pin it on one guy and punish him like he was the only one. Innocent until proven guilty my man. And they didn't find anything back then(because they weren't looking for it!) and finding it now is no good at all.
This isn't a Pete Rose case. He admitted to doing the game of baseball as SET OUT BY THE RULES OF THE GAME. Barry Bonds did NOT break the rules of the game, he took advantage of the situation. What athlete doesn't do that? Every person is looking for an edge when they're in a competitive setting, be it the work place or in a professional sport. He found a way to get one, one that WAS NOT illegal at the time he was doing according to the MLB.
You made some valid points, but you also shot it down in the exact same way.

Re: Bonds-O
Are MLB players allowed to drive drunk? Are they allowed to evade taxes? Are they allowed to beat their wives? None of that is against the bylaws of MLB. By the same token, they are not allowed to take steroids because it's against US law. So Bonds did do something illegal. He has also admitted to taking the steroids, but claims he didn't know what his trainer was giving him. If I'm at a party and someone comes up to me and says, "take this pill, it will make you feel better", and then I'm arrested later for taking an illegal substance, I can't blame it on the person who gave me the pill. I'm accountable for anything I put into my body.
I do agree you can't take away the records because you don't know for sure who else was doing the steroids (although I'd bet a years salary that Sosa and McGwire were in on the act). That is why they have ruined those records, they are no unapproachable for all future players.
What do you do when you know someone is guilty, but can't prove it? Most of the time you can do nothing, but this time, the BB writers can keep Bonds out of the HOF. That is the one measure of justice that can be served outside the courts and it will send a loud and clear message to all future baseball players.

Re: Bonds-O
Did you know that many of the over the counter supplements and shakes etc that are commonly found at gnc and other health food stores contain trace amounts of steroids? should our achievements have an asterik beside them?"sorry boss I cannot accept a promotion Im using creatine" I highly doubt that Barry's trainer and chemist presented the products to Barry as "street steroids" but rather the best supplementation available. so to compare taking a supplement to drunk driving or spousal abuse is nonsense really. we all need to stop being so sactimonius and self rightous and just back up off the future home run king of all time.unless of course you never took myoplex or early forms of creatine, or several hundred other supplements banned by the nfl that I myself and many of you(bleachercoaches) are currently using.

Re: Bonds-O
D-Nice, I'm not comparing steroids to drunk driving in terms of being equal crimes. I'm saying they are not against the rules of MLB, but they are both against the law.
Do you really think Bonds was taking nothing more than creatine and nutritional supplements from GNC? He cheated, plain and simple. If being sanctomonius is speaking against someone who cheats, then I guess I'm sanctimonius.

But if a player was caught drunk driving, he'd be punished by his team, along with recieving punishment from the law. Bonds has not been convicted or found guilty in EITHER situations. "It isn't cheating until you get caught."

This, in my opinion, is worse than what Pete Rose did. Pete Rose was a manager at the time so he wasn't physically altering the game. Barry's by being on steriods has won more games for his team than Pete Rose betting on baseball won (or lost) for his team. Do I think what Pete did was right no nor do I think he should be in the Hall of Fame.

I went to see a specialist. He gave me some stuff to use. A few months later I notice I'm getting bigger, faster, stronger. But I'm a dunce. I don't ask any questions like 'Hey man, what is that stuff you're giving me'. Then I start breaking all kinds of records. Must be my God-given ability. Couldn't be this 'cream' I've been using. It's just moisturizer. Keeps my skin soft and supple. For the ladies, ya know.

Personally, I think Rose should be in the hall. The lifetime ban was excessive.
However, you can't say that what he did didn't alter the results of any games. He made the final call as to who the pitcher was that night. If pitcher x is your worst pitcher and it's his turn in the rotation, you bet on the game for your team to win and put in pitcher y who is your best at the last minute. Lot's of people bet on the other team, but you make a last minute decision to put in your best pitcher and you win the game, and the bet.

Re: Bonds-O
What edge did Barry Bonds need though? Like I said he was already the best player in baseball and considered one of the best of all-time. According to the book he did this out of jealousy for what Big Mac and Sosa were doing at the time. I really don't know how creditable the authors are but doesn't this say something about Bond's character. I wonder what god-father Willie thinks of him? I do believe everyone should be getting the same treatment that Bonds is getting, but it doesn't work that way. He is still in baseball, still in the spotlight, and going after arguable the most sacred record in all of sports. People do not want to see this guy break it and I wouldn't either.
