The Circus Hits the Road
I think the profit sharing was not the real reason. I think the real reason was, if I was an AD for a Big East team and I looked at this statistics from the Paterno era:
PSU win/loss record vs:
WVU, 25-2
Pitt, 23-7,1
BC, 16-4
Rutgers, 16-1
Syracuse, 21-4
Temple, 22-0
I wouldn't want PSU in my conference either.

Many forts withstood the ravages of battle. Take Fort Courage for example. Even though it was manned by F Troop, the Hekawees really never, ever had a chance to overtake the fort. So much for that "monument of Stupidity" stuff.

Re: The Circus Hits the Road
It took more than one nay vote by Pitt to derail Paterno's feeble-minded plan. So don't solely blame Pitt Mr. AE for their failure to bow to his highness.
Do you think West Virginia was for it? Syracuse? And why would Temple have wanted to share their basketball gates with Paterno State without the greedy one reciprocating? It was an absolute joke of an attempt to unite the Eastern teams. It was countered with discussions more along the lines of what other conferences do and PSU wanted nothing to do with it. So, the Big East developed and in time became a football conference.

Hey, it was Patton's quote, not mine.

Roadie, I see what you mean but I dunno if I agree with this being blatant greed. I find it hard to believe that even with a mere 6 home games a season in football that 90% of universities don't make more money in those 6 games than in 13-15 home basketball games. I dont think that concept is too "feeble minded".

Wasn't the vote 5-3 to not allow PSU in the Big East? Or am I getting mixed up here.

Penn State needed 6 votes to get into the Big East and they got 5. The vote was 5-3. The thing is though this was not to accept the Paterno Plan this was just to let them in the Big East just as they joined the Big Ten. The Big Ten must have had a little more common sense because only one person really oppsed and that was Bobby Knight.
