The more private schools that enter the playoff system, the greater the wedge between the public and private sectors will become. Sooner or later, what happened in Kentucky will happen here too. Then there will be moaning and groaning from the private sector when changes are made to boundaries, transferring and financial aid.

Gnr.,
I was in Nam till 72. H Co. !st Cavalry Division: long range recon & exploitation Ops: we were all 75th Infantry. I'll tell you something most people don't know:most training was not conducted state side or in friendly nations. Training was a combat mission for volunteers. Volunteers were assigned and not accepted in the various Ranger companies until after a series of patrols and assignments by which the volunteer had passed the acid test of a Ranger- combat- and was accepted by his peers. Following peer acceptance a volunteer was allowed to wear the black beret and red, white and black scroll shoulder sleeve insignia bearing his Ranger company identity. Saw alot of death-friend and foe; thus the reluctance to discuss coupled with the whole post-Nam thing. Maybe I should apologize for abbreviating Viet Nam...Nah I don't think so!
Re the accusation of throwing my weight around: I believe this is ones' own perspective...the unquestioned, unchallanged bullying of BM has been going on for quite some time here; obviously I am out numbered but you know what that concerns me about as much as what I will have for lunch this day!
And Bd55, hope you have a better day today and likewise a good tomor!

maybe "gnr" and "nam" should private message eachother, or I mean private pissing match eachother. THIS TOPIC is about the advent of private schools into the piaa playoffs destroying a major fabric of our society that produces community pride. Schools like BEAVER FALLS,ALIQUIPPA,TYRONE, that are small communities that take pride in what the younger residents of that community accomplish are being robbed by opportunistic orginizations that do not play by the same rules.

D-Nice-Guy,
You know what, this is like having Alzheimer's. I make new friends every day. And so many people telling me what to do! Very helpful.
Boy, I try to stay on task as well as encouraging others to do the same; but my pals and various other nice guys distract/derail me!
As with this topic I inputted but got diverted!
Now, re this debate I think most responding here are missing a big point.
The PIAA is allowing more private schools in - not considering tightening regs on such institutions. What did I say previously: it is a moot point!

I of course have to agree here with D-nice. This has always been a problem, but it is really going to blow up now that the PIAA has let Philly in on the game.

The bottom line is as bad as some Catholic schools are in recruiting, whether it be intentional or unintentional, Charter Schools take it to the next level. I don't know how we change it, but somethign has to be done.

Anybody have any ideas? Do you write to your legislator for this stuff? Do you write to PIAA? I mean we could set up a picket at the next Priviate vs. Private PIAA state championship game.

I guess at least we can be thankful we are in the Western part of the state...at least you have a prayer of making it to Hershey...
And the last thing I must tell you...NEVER QUIT!

Hey Op,
You know I have to take exception with your comment:"as bad as some Catholic schools are in recruiting, whether it be intentional or unintentional," C'mon look @ the members of this forum: if a private school is doing anything out of the parameters of the rules you know a whistle will be blown!! Yet the R statement!?
Likewise, the "Love" for BM (and other private schools) is the reason I never believed one word of the so-called "offers" kids have had to attend there. People would be on the phone so fast it wouldn't be funny! Quicker than Don Jr can film a practice!!
And the eastern part of the state will still have your Berwicks, North Penns, S. Columbias, Chesters, C.Dauphins, C.Bucks, Cum.Valleys, Steeltons etc...

Building a powerhouse athletic team is a totally different ball game when you are comparing public vs. private. Like you stated earlier, and I am paraphrasing of course, 'many of the McCort transfers occurred after the success the Crushers enduring during the 2000-2001 seasons.' This statement is very true.

How many kids do you think grow up now in the Nanty Glo or Ebensburg area and dream of being a Huskie? Why not dream of being a Viking or a Devil? Because if you go to B.C. you will be winning championships! Success will bring the kids into a private system...there doesn't have to be any offers.

Now look at the big picture with these Charter Schools. The ACTUALLY did recruit until what...a year ago. Now, I find it very hard to believe that these practices just stopped cold turkey because the PIAA said they had to.
And the last thing I must tell you...NEVER QUIT!

Opinion Guy, You have a good point that winning and building a tradition make kids want to go there. But it can work both ways too. It seems that not too many people from the FH school district go to McCort and or Carroll. Why not? Because they have a solid school and a solid sports program. Look at the Westmont girls basketball team, a majority of those girls came up thru the Johstown Parochial League, but when they graduated from their respective catholic grade schools, they chose to go to Westmont. Did Westmont recruit them? I doubt it. They wanted to go there.
The recruiting issue is one that will be debated on here endlessly. i can see it from both ends as I have kids that chose/choose to go to public school and private school, as did I and my brother when we were that age. Will those issues be solved ever. I doubt it. I'm just for the kids going out and enjoying the opportunity to play sports at whatever school they are at.

Op and P4,
You both make good points and there probably is not an end to the debate (@ least not in the near future). And in relationship to Nanty Glo kids I knew the old Regs. related to recruiting and private schools. Almost verbatum they stated that any grade school or geographical area that has sent kids in the past to a parochial high school is in essence a Jr. High or "feeder" area for that high school. So all along, any Nanty Glo kid has had the option/choice to attend BC. I have not looked @ them (PIAA Regs) for 5or6 yrs but assume they are still worded similiarly.
