Windber spoils Shade's home opener

CAIRNBROOK — Friday night at the Shade Panthers’ newly renovated home field, an excited and optimistic crowd was hoping for a win from the home team.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, they were playing host to a Windber squad which Shade coach Chris Foltz said could be the best team in the conference.

“Our rushing game is our strong point,” said Windber coach Phil DeMarco, whose Ramblers earned a 28-0 thanks to a ground attack that picked up 197 yards.

Senior running back Matt Andrascik, who led all rushers with 80 yards, opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 13-yard run to cap a 59-yard drive. Dominic Balash made the extra point.

On Windber’s next possession, quarterback Taylor Keiper hooked up with senior wide receiver Dan Gardner for a 51-yard strike and Balash, a junior, added the point after to give the Ramblers a 14-0 lead.

After the kickoff, two false-start penalties had the Panthers deep in their own territory.

With less than two minutes to play in the first half, Windber’s Jake Lehmana recovered a Shade fumble at the 8-yard line. Lehman ran it in for the score on the next play. After another Balash extra point, Windber held a commanding 21-0 lead.

“That turnover near the end of the half was the turning point of the game,” DeMarco said.

Windber’s special teams recovered another fumble at Shade’s 1 after a bad snap to Shade punter Jacob Hetzer. Lehman pounded his way to another touchdown and Balash converted his fourth extra point of the night to set the score at 28-0.

Despite getting good field position from returnmen Brandon Kudasic and Mitch Edwards to start several drives, Shade’s offense struggled to move the ball against a stingy Ramblers defense that allowed only 60 total yards.

Windber’s defense has yet to allow a point.

Shade’s youth was apparent with costly penalties and turnovers.

“Our guys gave it their all, but a couple of mistakes hurt us,” Foltz said.

The Panthers fell to 0-2.

Junior Nathan Zimmerman led Shade with 36 yards rushing.
