LAUREL HIGHLANDS CONFERENCE GRIDIRON REPORT
By the "LHSPORTS GURU"
WEEK THREE: September 15-16, 2006
This week features the head-to-head battle between the two 0-2 teams, someone has to win, and only of two of the three 2-0 teams will win this week.
Panthers (1-1) at Red Devils (1-1) (Natural Grass)
After the big win and their fans' classless victory lap last week against the once mighty Huskies, the Panthers are due for a let down. Holsberger, Fetzer and the boys put a licking on the Huskies, but don’t let that score fool you. As for the Devils, after taking off the first half against Johnstown last week the CC came out and won the second half 27-14. With Trojans running out of every nook and cranny along the front line Friday night, CC QB Shane McGregor (24 passes in week two) had to be treated for shell shock. McGregor looked Magneto and Johnstown is from the steel city, you get the picture. In 39 years of games I have never seen a QB get hit that many times, that hard, and continually bounce back up. Look for Faish to rack up another 150+ yard game (302 in the first two games) and the Devils to solve their pass protection problems in route to a big win.
Devils by 8
Richland (2-0) at Saints North (1-1) (Turf)
This game features two of the great young coaches in our area, Bailey and Sponsky. Do you think it is a coincidence that both of their fathers were/are coaches and that they both played college football? On to the game and pardon my golf analogy but Ernie Fetzer gave everyone in the LHAC a read on the BC defense, too bad it was a week late for the Dragons. Next up for the Saints North is Air Pecora and his entourage. With Bailey Jr. calling the plays and the secret weapon RPM on the staff this could very well be lights out for the Huskies. Add to the fact that the game is on the carpet at SFU and you might just say that Richland is the greatest show on turf in the LHAC. With Craig at the helm of the Huskies look for an improved team this week. Also, I look for some changes up front. Craig will put the best 11 kids on the field and gain a lot of respect this week. If he can’t get it done with the 300 pound line he will put a 180 pound kid in who has some heart! Take the Rams over UBC and you never know what will happen given the fact that the game is being played where Devine intervention takes on many shapes...
Rams by 3…Touchdowns
“W”illtoppers (1-1) at Trojans (2-0) (Turf)
The “W”illtoppers pitched a shutout on Friday night and this week they will do a 180. Reed has a need for speed and on the fast track at GHS look for him to run buck wild on the “W”illtoppers, that is of course if he is healed from his game ending injury against the Devils Friday night. As he gimped off of the field in the third quarter and I couldn’t help but wonder why in the heck he was out there in the first place. With 209 yards and up 32-0 at the half, I would have had him in street clothes but not J-Town. Their starters played majority of the game. Their kicker got injured in the third quarter as well and I noticed that they carried him off of the field at the end of the game. If healthy, there is no one who can beat the Trojans but themselves. Bresovick is a “MAN”. He can’t be blocked and his motor does not stop. Best of luck to Westmont and the entire LHAC. Johnstown will not lose until week 7 or 9, if at all!
Trojans by 12.5
Saints South (1-1) at Somerset (0-2) at (Natural Grass)
Somerset has a jail, a court house, a turnpike, hotels, and a hospital. Where the heck did their football program go? With a HS that is AAA and a weight room that rivals some colleges the only thing that the Eagles boys have on their mind is baseball. Are you kidding me? When you are walking around the halls let your buddies know they will not be Major League Baseball players. Tell them to get their butts out their and help you win some football games. I feel bad for the 40 kids and staff at Somerset, and if Fetzer and Krevetski couldn’t win there, no one can. McCort will win this one big unless their bus breaks down on 219. Comparing scores, which you really can’t do; McCort beat CC in the second scrimmage by 8 touchdowns and CC beat Somerset by 3 tds so…
McCort by 77!
Highlanders (0-2) at Dragons (0-2) (Natural Grass)
Ten centuries ago a guy wearing a kilt may have had a chance with a dragon but not in 2006 and not in Roaring Springs. AJ and the boys will bounce back from the lick’en they took last week. Life is filled with ups and downs. Both Central and the Highlanders are down so someone in the words of Marshal Mathers, “Please Stand Up, Please Stand Up”. Opps wrong sport. CH is better than they were last year, but not good enough to win this one. I look for Stiffey, D1ck, Runk and Knisely to take out their frustrations on the Kilts in Stinkville Friday night.
Dragons by 14
GAME OF THE WEEK
Rangers (1-1) at Bison (2-0) (Natural Grass)
There have been some great games in this series and my guess is that this one will not disappoint any fans, until the final gun. The Rangers have been practicing a little harder than normal in preparation of the Bison coming to town. I think they had two practices on Saturday and one on Sunday. For the Bison, Swaimy has his squad clicking on all cylinders but I think I see that pesky check engine light flickering. Bailey hasn’t lost 2 games in a row for quite some time and this week will prove that last week was a fluke. The Bison will lose their first of three in a row on Friday and the Rangers will begin a three game winning streak as well. Look for the dry weather to give Rearick all he needs to ring up 35 on the Bison.
