Eastern H.S. Football playoffs are taking shape

Post by THE CHOPS »

They could be made simple...

Remember when we used to serve up all sorts of tortured scenarios about District #3 football playoff qualifying this time of year?

We could still do it again. But we won't.

District # 3's expanded playoffs this year have virtually eliminated those down-to-the-wire chases for all but the lowest seeds. Frankly, it's hard to see the thrill in the chase for the No. #16 spot in Class (AAAA) or Class (AAA).

So instead of kicking around all of the crazy if A-beats-B but if C-loses-to-D stuff, we'll just spit it out for you this way: Who's in, and who's in with a win this week. CLASS (AAAA) (16 teams qualify)

In: Harrisburg (7-1), Governor Mifflin (7-1), State College (7-1), Wilson (7-1), Manheim Twp. (7-1) and Central Dauphin (6-2).

In with a win this week: Muhlenberg (6-2) over Daniel Boone (8-0).

Altoona (5-3), Bishop McDevitt (5-3) and Conestoga Valley (6-2) could also secure spots with victories, but each are dependent on other results to secure District #3-6 AAAA berths. CLASS (AAA) (16 teams qualify)

In: Daniel Boone (8-0), Manheim Central (8-0), Northern (8-0), South Western (7-1), Susquehanna Twp. (7-1), New Oxford (7-1), Red Land (7-1) and Susquehannock (7-1).

In with a win this week: West Perry (7-1) over Shippensburg (4-4), Gettysburg (6-2) over Red Land.

Lampeter-Strasburg (6-2), Hamburg (7-1) and Greencastle-Antrim (6-2) could also claim spots based on other results. CLASS (AA) (8 teams qualify).

In: Lancaster Catholic (8-0), Wyomissing (8-0), Trinity (6-2), Columbia (6-2), Boiling Springs (6-2).

In with a win this week: Bermudian Springs (6-2) over Fairfield (0-7).

The last two spots are up in the air, although Milton Hershey (4-4) is surprisingly close to a spot given its .500 record. Littlestown (4-4) could also qualify with a win this weekend and certain other results. CLASS (A) (8 teams qualify)...

In: Millersburg (8-0), Steelton-Highspire (7-1), Reading Central Catholic (7-1), Halifax (6-2) and Camp Hill (4-4).

In with a win this week: Holy Name (3-5) over Kutztown (0-8) and Hanover (2-6) over Littlestown (4-4).

The less said about Class (A), the better.

The 2006 District #3 playoffs will begin Nov. 10 in all classes. The teams with the highest seeds will host the lower seeds in the first three rounds in Class (AAAA) and Class (AAA) and in the first two rounds in Class (AA) and Class (A).

The 3-A and 3-(AA) championship games will be played Nov. 25 at Hersheypark Stadium.

The D#3-(AAA) will be played Dec. 1 and the D#3-6 Class (AAAA) championship will be played Dec. 2. Both games will be played at Hersheypark Stadium unless a District #6 team is the highest seeded team in the Class (AAAA) finals. In that case, the game would be played at a District#6 venue.

The D#3-(A) and 3-(AA) champions will enter the P.I.A.A. bracket in the quarterfinals in their respective classes in Week #14. The D# 3-(AAA) champion will move into the East final in Week #15; the D# 3-6 (AAAA) champion will move into the West final.

P.I.A.A. Championship games will be played on Dec. 15 Class (A) and Class (AAA) and Dec. 16 Class (AA) and Class (AAAA) at Hersheypark Stadium.
