Who should Play Ohio State in the Championship?

Post by Dfense wins games »

Rematch with Michigan
...no, michigan had their shot, not to mention they didnt even win their conference

USC
yes, if they win out, esp with a win over ND, and a Florida loss

Florida
yes if they win out, including a win in the SEC championship

ND
yes with a great win over USC, although how could they get put in over Michigan after they thumped them (early in the year or not)

Arkansas
no, USC defeated them, USC is in before Arkansas

...If there was a playoff, this whole situation would have been eliminated...the top 5 teams in the county all could compete for the championship..

How about this. OSU plays USC because ppl dont want to see a rematch. Then Michigan plays Florida, and both Big Ten teams beat their opponents 44-10. What a great bowl season. So basically everyone b*tched and complained because we never got to see the 2 best teams play, now you dont want UM and OSU playing because "they already had their chance". Nice argument.

**EDIT**

Florida has a case for a title match. They need Arkansas to beat LSU, an then they themselves have to beat Arkansas. USC lost to an unranked team, regardless of whether or not they beat ND this weekend. ND was slaughtered by Michigan. So who deserves it? Of all the 1 loss teams, UM clearly has the edge, BY A LONGSHOT. Then Florida. As far as I'm concerned, USC shouldn't even be in the equation.

A rematch should certainly be in the cards. Unless USC puts on a show and destroys Notre Dame (which is very possible), then Michigan is the #2 team in the nation. This means that they should be in the National Championship. I don't think there is anything wrong with a rematch. The first matchup was great. This stuff happens all the time in High School playoffs where a team beats someone in the regular season then loses to them when it counts. This is the oppurtunity to see how well Troy Smith can perform under pressure against the BEST possible opponent. Again, if USC pounds Notre Dame then I am not sure who the best possible opponent may be.

just to clarify...those werent my oppinions, just arguments that i have been hearing people say...

i think of all the teams, Michigan should get another shot. Dont get me wrong, i am a huge ND fan, but they got slaughtered by Michigan at ND, i agree, USC shouldnt get a shot(they lose to an unranked team, drop 1-2 spots, ND loses to #12 michigan and drops 10 spots, you tell me whats fair about that...

a rematch would just say when in the season you lose is irrelevant

i think a team in November needs to be playing their best doesnt matter if Michigan lost to OSU or Indiana....in my opinion when you lose SHOULD matter

We really don't know how strong the Big Ten Conference is this year. Because of this fact, OSU SHOULD play someone from another conference. Sure, OSU beat Texas, but are the Big Ten schools that good this year? Don't pit two conference teams together for the national Championship.

What a great year for the "Plus One" concept that unfortunately was nixed by the school presidents.

Imagine the Fla-Ark winner playing Mich in the Orange Bowl and the USC-ND winner playing Ohio St. in the Rose Bowl on New Years to determine who plays in Pheonix for the title.

Unfortunately that is not the scenario.

I am not against a rematch as long as it is completely obvious that Michigan is the best of the contenders.

I can't be 100% certain they are better than a 1 loss USC, Florida, or Arkansas squad so I lean toward giving one of those squads a shot. I would rate them Florida, USC and then Arkansas as far as a pecking order on which team (if they finish with one loss) should get the opportunity. If each of these 3 loses one sometime in the next 2-weeks then Michigan has to get the nod over ND whom they beat. As for Louisville or WVU......obviously Top Ten teams but suffering from neither of them really standing out as they've both lost within their conference, so they take a back seat to the three I mention above in my eyes.

What about Arkansas, here? They lost to USC, who is third. If Arkansas beats LSU (could go either way) and then when they pound the ball down UF's throat and expose them as the weak team they really are, doesn't Arkansas have more quality wins than even OSU???? Surely they have a better resume than Notre Dame or Michigan.

If Arkansas beats LSU and Florida, they deserve the right to play Ohio State, because of all the good teams they beat all season. If Florida beats Arkansas (if Ark beats LSU) then maybe UF has a claim. But going back to what Roadie said, kinda... if we had a plus one, who would end up playing? Ohio State and Michigan.

Im all about seeing the best two teams playing for the National Championship, but are we sure Michigan is that second best team? Michigan was the number one defense and was giving up an average of like 40 yards rushing per game and on Saturday they gave up 187 and 6.5 per run and Troy Smith smoked them all day. Now is Ohio State just that good, was it an off day for that defense, or is it a testament of the opposition they have played all year? Isnt this after all a down year for the Big Ten? Im just not convinced as everyone else that they are a clear number two team. It was a great game Saturday, but I dont think the margin of victory indicated that it was that close.

What is weighed heavier when choosing a good team? Is it good loses or good wins. Michigan obviously has the best loss you can have losing to the number one team, but I would say they only have two good wins and if USC wins out, one of their good wins is the same as Michigans. How many good wins does USC, Arkansas, and Florida have? I would say they all have better wins then Michigan, so if any of those teams win out they have just as much right as Michigan does to play the game.

And not that this really matters, but we know how the Ohio St. vs. Michigan game ends already. Carr loses to Tressell, Smith cant be beat by Michigan, and Ohio St. wins.

I'm not sure Ohio State beats them again, Weapon X. As much as I think Urban Meyer is a liar and a sell-out, he did kinda say some truthful things in that interview. And one thing I think he hinted at, was the fact of how hard it is to beat the same team twice in one season. He even said that OSU should go get rings made saying national champs, since they already won the game. Okay, that makes some sense I guess, but if he feels that way, then why did he take a job in a conference where you basically have a strong chance of playing the same team twice if you win your division? If I was a coach, I think I would rather have been on the losing end of a 42-39 battle, the first time around. Because now Michigan knows exactly what to do to stop Ohio State. I just think UM is in a better position right now, making adjustments, playing off morale, and going into a rematch.

I really dont know how I feel about this title game. Michigan has a blowout win over ND, and I think ND beats USC, knocking USC out of the way for Michigan. If Florida beats an 11-1 Arkansas, how can you not let UF play in that game? What if Arkansas goes 12-1 with a win over #4 Florida as well as 95 other decent SEC teams. If Arkansas escapes LSU, which I think is gonna be a much bigger test than Florida will be, then Arkansas (w/ their one loss to the #3 ranked team) should get to play Ohio State. USC lost to an unranked team, I really feel they have no place in this title contention, because everything needs to be weighed out right now.
