True fans of any sport will tell you success is in the numbers. If that is correct, then here are some interesting numbers put up by the eight teams that will be playing for WPIAL football gold on Friday at Heinz Field.
* Teams in the W.P.I.A.L. Finals combined record: 91-4 (4 teams undefeated, 4 teams with one loss)
* This is the second year in a row both Class (A) teams are undefeated...
* 7 of 8 teams are averaging over 30 points per game
* 5 of 8 teams have scored over 400 points this season
* 5 of 8 teams defensively have given up an average of less than 10 points per game
* 3 of 8 teams have held opponents to less than 100 points
* Upper St. Clair Head Coach Jim Render is in his 37th year and has 312 wins
* Penn Hills Neil Gordan is in his 20th year as head coach, 31st overall
* Upper St. Clair and Penn Hills met in the 1995 Championship with Penn Hills winning 20-13
* Upper St. Clair won the (AAAA) Championship in 1997 over Penn Trafford 28-27 and lost in 2003 to Pittsburgh Central Catholic 42-10
* Thomas Jefferson’s defense only gave up 47 points in the regular season and totaled 5 shutouts
* Thomas Jefferson's Bill Cherpak is in his 12th year as head coach won the WPIAL and PIAA Title in 2004. In 2003 TJ lost in the Championship to Pine Richland and lost in the Semifinals the previous 4 years including 1999 to this years Finals opponent Blackhawk 28-7
* Blackhawks Joe Hamilton in his 32nd. Year as Head Coach and is only the second coach in team history. He notched his 300th victory in the Quarterfinals over Hampton. Hamilton’s Blackhawk teams have won 4 WPIAL Titles in 1991, 92, 93 and 96. This will be the 8th. time Hamilton has led the Cougars to the Class AAA Championship Game
* Jeannette is playing in its 11th. WPIAL Championship since 1932 winning the title 6 times. The last Championship came in 1983 over Canevin 6-0. They last played in the Championship in 2003 losing to Aliquippa
* Greensburg Central Catholics Muzzy Colosimo is in his 13th. year at G.C.C. His team has 3 Division 1 recruits, quarterback Cody Catalina (Syracuse), wide receiver Nick Sukay (Penn State) and running back Max Suter (Syracuse)
* This is the second time in three years Clairton and Rochester have met in the final. Rochester won, 15-14, in 2004
* Clairton missed the playoffs in 2005 but came back with a vengeance this season scoring 50 points twice and scored more than 20 points in 11 of their 12 wins (8-0 win over Duquesne)
* Rochester is trying to win its fifth championship in seven years. They would become the third team in WPIAL history to achieve that milestone as only two others have won five titles in a seven-year period. Aliquippa won five in a six-year period (1984-89). Braddock won six in a row from 1954-59, including a 7-7 tie with Midland in the 1954 title game
* Rochester only gave up 7 points in Big 7 conference play and had 6 regular season shutouts giving up only 41 points. They have 7 total shutouts including 37-0 First Round playoff win over Carmichaels
