The Associated Press:

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — Andrew Astorino directed General McLane's devious option attack to a state championship.

The senior quarterback scored twice in the second half and the Lancers' defense came up with a big stop on fourth down late in the fourth quarter to defeat Pottsville 28-23 on Friday night to win the P.I.A.A. Class (AAA) title.

Trailing by a touchdown, Pottsville's Matt Feeney took a handoff left on fourth-and-3 from the General McLane 15 and was stopped near the first-down marker. It was so close that the referees needed to measure.

The ecstatic Lancers (13-2) raced to the sideline with their arms raised after an official ruled Feeney was stopped short. The play helped General McLane claim a title in their first appearance at Hersheypark Stadium.

Astorino scored the game-winner, scrambling from 19 yards out for a touchdown with 4:55 left in the game. Ryan Skelton ran for a 2-point conversion to give the Lancers a 28-21 lead.

But General McLane couldn't breathe easy until late. Even the defensive stand didn't ensure victory after the Lancers failed to run out the clock and had to take a safety with five seconds left to let Pottsville (13-3) close within 28-23.

General McLane squibbed the ensuing kickoff that hit off a Pottsville player but was recovered by the Lancers. The boys from Edinboro could finally enjoy themselves after winning a tight game with championship consequences.

Tom McFarland ran for 171 yards and two second-half touchdowns on 17 carries, including a 24-yarder that gave Pottsville a brief 21-20 lead with 5:40 left in the third quarter.

Astorino finished with 21 carries and 172 yards — 71 coming on a scoring run that had given General McLane a 20-14 lead.

The Crimson Tide left Hershey disappointed again, having lost the Class (AAA) title game to Franklin Regional last season.

The squads combined for 781 yards of total offense — 395 by the Lancers. General McLane had 353 rushing yards to 275 for the Tide.

Skelton finished with 132 yards rushing on 20 carries, while his brother Dan Skelton had 15 yards and a score on eight carries. Matt Feeney added 100 yards on 21 carries for Pottsville.
