Lawyer: Board member resigning....

WINDBER — Windber Area School Board member Timothy Harrigan will resign his position next week, his Johnstown attorney said Friday.
Harrigan was charged earlier this week with hitting a boys’ basketball coach.
Robert D. “Gunner” Gleason said the letter of resignation will be accompanied by a statement from Harrigan.
“He has made a strong apology,” Gleason said. “He knows he can’t stay on the board after this.”
In addition, Harrigan will accept responsibility for his actions on Dec. 7. Police cited Harrigan for hitting ninth-grade basketball coach Gary Ursino following a practice session at Windber Elementary School in Paint Township.
“We plan to enter a plea,” Gleason said. “There will be some fines.”
The summary charges of disorderly conduct and harassment call for fines of $636.50, according to citations filed at District Judge Joseph Cannoni’s office.
School board President Douglas Henger said the board may call a special meeting to act on Harrigan’s resignation, depending on when it arrives.
Paint Township police cited Harrigan for harassment and disorderly conduct on school property. Cannoni’s office said Harrigan was mailed the citations Monday.
Harrigan also is a teacher in the Westmont Hilltop School District and has been suspended from his teaching position.
Gleason said Harrigan hopes to get his job back.
