Eastern Hoops Teams to watch, as the season heats up...

Post by THE CHOPS »

Well, High Basketball season is starting to take shape. The football pads are still being worn by some of the B-courts, but most teams are settling in to playing hoops.

Out East this is the way I see it for now; ( subject to change of course)....

CLASS (AAAA): 1. Harrisburg (6-0); 2. Chambersburg (8-0); 3. Reading (6-1); 4. Red Lion (7-1); 5. Red Land (6-1).

Coach Smallwood prefers the role of underdog, but that's an impossible label this year. These Cougars are G-O-O-D. ... Not far behind, and the only other Mid-Penn Commonwealth team with a legitimate shot at that crown, are the Trojans. ... Reading High's only loss is to Chester, of course a major PIAA player. ... The Lions, despite a surprising loss to York (4-4), already own victories over West York and Dallastown. ... And the Patriots' only loss, with their football players still in action, came in the season opener to Boyertown. ... Just missing the cut were a big clump of L-L Section I teams -- Hempfield (7-1), Manheim Twp. (7-1), Penn Manor (8-1) and Warwick (7-0) -- if only because it's too tough to pick a clear favorite yet.

CLASS (AAA): 1. West York (6-2); 2. York Suburban (8-1); 3. Lebanon (6-2); 4. Lancaster Catholic (6-1); 5. Susquehanna Twp. (6-2).

The Bulldogs' win Saturday over Commuincations Tech makes them the clear favorites. They've won five straight after losing early games to Williamsport and Red Lion. ... Suburban owns several quality wins, most recently York Catholic, to offset the loss to Spring Grove. ... Sure, Lebanon lost to upstart Annville-Cleona on Friday, but the Cedars can roll with anybody. ... The Crusaders lost to Lebanon, but have the size to bang, as Central York and Trinity can attest. ... And give the Indians the nod out of the Mid-Penn Keystone, barely edging Hershey (7-2) because their skill guys have plenty of time to rebound from the stunning resignation of head coach Emery Cook just before the season ... Just missing the cut were James Buchanan (5-1) and Bishop McDevitt (5-4).

CLASS (AA): 1. Trinity (6-2); 2. Annville-Cleona (7-0); 3. York Catholic (7-2); 4. Tulpehocken (9-1); 5. Delone Catholic (7-2).

While lacking the superstar power of previous years, the Shamrocks can defend with the best of 'em. ... Best early story belongs to A-C, which proved its worth by beating Lebanon Friday. ... The Irish might have lost to Dallastown and Suburban, but there's too much talent here to be ignored. ... Tulpy owns a six-game winning streak and has knocked off a couple quality District 1 foes (Upper Perk and St. Pius X). ... Squires need a few quality wins to earn a better slot. ... Milton Hershey (5-3) and Columbia (5-3) follow the Top 5.

CLASS (A): 1. Central Catholic (7-2); 2. Greenwood (9-0); 3. Scotland (4-1); 4. High Point Baptist (7-1); 5. Holy Name (6-3).

Alex Franklin was a heck of a player, but the Cardinals haven't missed a beat since he graduated last year. ... And neither have the Wildcats, who've barely been challenged yet. ... Bring back the Cadets! ... And how about that High Point club? FYI: They left the CCAC and moved east into a more competitive league of District 1 teams. ... The Blue Jays, like Susquehanna Twp., have the skills to ultimately recover from the out-of-nowhere resignation of their head coach, Lloyd Wolf. ... Just missing the cut were Millersburg (5-5), Lebanon Catholic (3-7) and Harrisburg Christian (6-1).
