Coaching changes at Delone Catholic, Williamsport
The Associated Press:
(AP) — Dennis Frew, a "28"-year coaching veteran whose teams won six District #3 football championships at Delone Catholic High School, has been forced to step down as coach.
Frew, also the school's athletic director, did not have his coaching contract renewed. Instead, the school reassigned Frew's duties to allow him to concentrate on the athletic director's position.
Frew's teams had a record of 220-101-3, including a 45-8 run from 1987-90 and a 53-8 record from 1999-2003.
Delone's district championships came in 1989, 1990, 1994, 1999, 2000 and 2003. Frew took his teams into the PIAA playoffs five times, but did not win a state playoff game. The Squires are 15-15 over the last three seasons under Frew, a native of Monessen.
Williamsport coach Tim Thompson also saw his position opened after the Millionaires went 11-19 over three seasons. Thompson was hired by Williamsport after a successful run at neighboring Class (A) Loyalsock Township.
"I'm not going to complain. I had three years," Thompson said. "We had success as far as getting kids on to the next level and academics, but when you look at wins and losses, we had no winning seasons the past three years."

FROM TURF TO TANK:@ C.J. Marck had an outstanding football season for Pennsbury, leading the Falcons into the PIAA semifinals and making the AP Class (AAAA) first team as a linebacker.
Marck is also an outstanding swimmer. As a junior last year, Marck won the District #1 Class (AAA) title in the 200 butterfly and was third in the PIAA championships in the event.
But Marck, who will play football at Connecticut next season, has decided to forgo swimming this season.
"I really want to dedicate myself to football," Marck said. "I wouldn't feel right swimming because I wouldn't be giving it my full effort."
"Obviously we will miss him," Pennsbury coach John Wilson said. "But he had to do what was best for himself. I think with C.J. we could have had a real championship team this year, but our remaining swimmers are moving forward rapidly, and I think we still have a very good team."

CLOSED-DOOR SESSION:@ Last year, the Philadelphia Catholic League boys basketball championship game ended with a player taunting the crowd, objects being thrown from the stands and police being called to La Salle University.
Last week, title game participants Neumann-Goretti and Roman Catholic played a regular-season game before a crowd estimated at 60. Neumann-Goretti, the home team, defeated Roman Catholic 71-68.
The Catholic League decided that this year's two games between the schools had to be played with no spectators present. Only the teams, administrators, media and security were allowed to watch.
Neumann-Goretti coach Carl Arrigale didn't attend. He was suspended for the first four games of Catholic League play because his former player, Derrick Rivera, returned taunts to Roman Catholic fans who had been yelling at him during the championship game.
Arrigale owns an appliance store in South Philadelphia and was completing a sale to a customer in the game's final minutes. He said employees were trying to signal to him what was going on in the game while he was conducting business.
"Crazy," he said.
