Windber H.S. Introduces A new sport...
Windber to add girls soccer program...
THE TRIBUNE-DEMOCRAT
The Windber athletic program will be welcoming two new additions this fall.
Starting in the 2007-08 academic year, the school will field a girls varsity soccer team for the first time. The school district is also installing a new permanent electronic scoreboard at the school’s soccer field. The school had been using a portable scoreboard at home games.
The portable scoreboard will remain in use on days in which the baseball field at the Windber athletic complex will be used for soccer.
Previously girls competed on the boys varsity squad as the Ramblers played as a coed unit against boys competition. The junior high program will continue as a coed squad.
Windber Athletic Director Ralph DeMarco said that a series of donations will make the new scoreboard a reality. Primary financial help came from the Whalley Charitable Trust, the Windber Soccer Boosters and the Windber Area School District. Two donors remain anonymous.
DeMarco also noted that two scoreboard companies have made offers to the school with the specifications that Windber has in mind. A decision is expected later this week.
“We’ve been getting input and varying opinions from schools that have soccer scoreboards in place,” DeMarco said. “We want to make informed decisions. This idea was the brainchild of the parents and Coach (Kern) Locke. I sort of rode shotgun through it all.
“It’s been a labor of love for everybody involved.”
