Mother vs., son, husband vs. wife in Pa. prep matchups

The Associated Press:

(AP) — Mother vs. son.

Husband vs. wife.

Not exactly normal matchups in the high school sports world, but they occurred this week in Pennsylvania.

West Philadelphia boys basketball coach Dawn Hoover found herself going against her son, Kenny Moore, when the first-year coach's team played University City.

Son got the better of mom this time, a 70-62 victory by University City in which Moore had 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks. Eleven of Moore's points came in the fourth quarter.

Hoover is the fifth woman to coach a boys basketball team in the Philadelphia Public League, but Monday's game was the first in which any coached against a son.

Also in eastern Pennsylvania, Hatboro-Horsham High School girls basketball coach Eric Glesmer and Central Bucks West coach Heather Weindorfer aren't just rivals, they're husband and wife.

Last year, when the two were boyfriend and girlfriend, their teams had an amicable split of their two games. On Tuesday, Weindorfer's CB West team defeated her husband's team 57-46.

"I probably want to say it's a little bit more intense than most games," said Glesmer, who married Weindorfer on Oct. 14. "We're both very competitive people. Whether it's at miniature golf or checkers, we both want to win."

Weindorfer said it is a tradition for her team to have pasta parties before games against rivals Central Bucks East and Central Bucks South. This season, a party was planned for the Hatboro-Horsham game, too.

The couple first met when they were both assistant coaches at Archbishop Wood High School in 1997.

RULES ARE RULES:@ Philadelphia Catholic League schools will join the PIAA next year but are not eligible for the PIAA playoffs until the "2008-09" school year. However, the schools must follow all P.I.A.A. rules and regulations beginning next fall. Yea Right !!!

This is the same path followed by the Philadelphia Public League in "2003-04" before it became eligible for P.I.A.A. championships, but there's a difference.

Catholic League schools schedule Inter-Academic League schools frequently. Inter-Ac schools do not belong to the P.I.A.A., partly because those schools sometimes have athletes who have repeated a grade after starting ninth grade.

P.I.A.A. regulations prohibit member schools from playing nonmember schools with fifth-year players. Inter-Ac officials will meet later this month with P.I.A.A. executive director Brad Cashman for exploratory talks about P.I.A.A. membership, although Cashman doubts the six schools are close to applying for admission.

With the Catholic League joining the P.I.A.A., the only Philadelphia-area schools that won't be P.I.A.A. members are those that belong to two small leagues for private high schools, the Inter-Ac and the Friends League.

OH BROTHER !!! Where does it all end at ????
