It's like a state championship game in the middle of the season. The highly-regarded Aliquippa boys' basketball team will play Philadelphia Prep Charter as part of the 12th annual SportsFever Challenge at York College on Saturday, January 20th.
The game is significant because Prep Charter is the defending P.I.A.A. champion and the No. #1-ranked Class (AA) team in the state. Aliquippa, the No. #1-ranked W.P.I.A.L. Class (AA) team, is a heavy favorite to make it to the P.I.A.A. Class (AA) championship this season and is ranked No. #2 in the state.
You might not get a better east-west matchup this season. At least not until City League power Schenley takes on Chester January 28th.
But as far as the Aliquippa-Prep Charter matchup goes, there will be future Division I college players all over the court. Aliquippa's 6-foot-9 Herb Pope has signed with New Mexico State and 6-6 junior Jonathan Baldwin has an offer from Marquette. Prep Charter has twin brothers Marcus and Markieff Morris. Marcus is 6-8 and Markieff 6-9, and both have signed with Memphis.
Aliquippa coach Marvin Emerson doesn't want to put too much emphasis on this game because the two teams could meet again in March for the P.I.A.A. title.
"You want to win, but you don't want to show everything," Emerson said. "You kind of want to test the waters, but not show too much."
Aliquippa has one other game on its schedule against a tough opponent outside the W.P.I.A.L. On Sunday, Jan. 28 th, Aliquippa will play Mount Vernon, N.Y., at Duquesne's Palumbo Center in the Pittsburgh High School Basketball Classic. Mount Vernon was ranked among the top "25" teams in the country at the start of the season.
Moye Shows More....
Rochester's Derek Moye is a standout football player being recruited by Division I colleges and is a W.P.I.A.L. track sprint champion. If that doesn't impress you enough about his athletic ability, consider what he did in a basketball game earlier this week. He had 24 rebounds.
Moye, a senior, leads Rochester's basketball team in scoring at "19" points per game.
Local Player now in N.F.L. Playoffs
Former Greensburg Central Catholic High School and Yale quarterback Jeff Mroz has officially signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles are looking for depth behind backup Jeff Garcia as they prepare for this Saturdays playoff game against the New Orleans Saints.
Go Figure  :?: :?: :?:
The New Castle boys have been one of the hardest teams to figure out this season.
Many pegged the Red Hurricanes as the team to beat in Section #3 and many had Coach John Sarandrea's team ranked in the top five in W.P.I.A.L. Class (AAAA) at the start of the season.
New Castle started with a 5-3 record, but is 1-5 since. The Red Hurricanes are 1-4 in Section #3 and in danger of not making the playoffs. New Castle has qualified for the postseason "14" years in a row, the longest current streak in the W.P.I.A.L.
It seems New Castle's biggest problem has been scoring. During the 5-3 start, the Hurricanes averaged close to 60 points a game. In the 1-5 skid, they are averaging only 41 points. Included are losses of 50-43 to Shaler, 39-36 to Seneca Valley, 53-35 to Pine-Richland and 44-29 to North Allegheny.
But don't count out New Castle yet. Sarandrea seems to find a way into the playoffs. The Hurricanes won their final three section games last year to qualify.

Brother Act
The top two scorers in area hockey live in the same house.
Pine-Richland's Dylan Trombetta, a sophomore, is the No. #1 scorer and his brother, Phil, a senior, is second.

High School to College
Many high school football coaches have said over the years that Gerry Faust ruined it for any coach who wanted to make the jump from high school to college head coach. Faust went from Cincinnati Moeller straight to Notre Dame, but had little success with the Fighting Irish.
But the University of North Texas is trying it again.
Todd Dodge was a highly successful coach at national power Southlake Carroll High School in Texas, winning four 5-A state titles. But North Texas recently hired him to be its head coach.
Dodge is bringing three of his high school assistants with him. Ron Mendoza, Todd Ford and Robert Drake have all been hired as assistants at North Texas.

Rumors........
Butler High School is looking for a new football coach and rumors are that one of the candidates is Hampton coach Greg Mihalik, who was a finalist for the job when Garry Cathell was hired years ago.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Where Are They Now?
Blackhawk graduate Ryan Evanochko is averaging 14 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds a game for the Wisconsin-Green Bay basketball team, which has a 10-7 record. Wisconsin-Green Bay is a Division I college.
Oakland Catholic graduate Eve Pyle has started 15 games for the Miami of Ohio Red Hawks and is averaging 9 points and 6 rebounds.
