Steelers pick Tomlin as head coach
Sunday, January 21, 2007

By Ed Bouchette and Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Mike Tomlin

The Steelers have informed Mike Tomlin, the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, that he will be their next head coach. The team plans a news conference to announce his hiring.

The sides were negotiating a contract tonight for four years and an option year.

The Steelers made their decision today between Russ Grimm, their assistant head coach and offensive line coach, and Tomlin. They informed Grimm today that they had chosen Tomlin.

Tomlin, 34, will be the fourth consecutive coach hired by the Steelers who was an assistant in his 30s with another team before arriving in Pittsburgh. Bill Austin was 37 when he was chosen in 1966, Chuck Noll was 37 in 1969 and Bill Cowher was 34 when he was hired in 1992.

I wonder if he will bring the 4-3 to the Burgh. I don't think the Steelers have very good personell up front for it right now, but if that is what he is doing we'll see it in the draft for sure.

I don't know Coach, I wondered 'bout that also & believe the Steelers have more depth than most teams on the D-line. If you remember C Hoke did an excellent job filling in for C Hampton 2 yrs ago, I also like T Kirschke & R bailey....they also have a youngster S Nua I'd like to see more of next preseason....4-3 maybe.

But also heard D LeBeau has been retained (great move) which may mean the 3-4 stays. Who knows?
I have to say thank you to me ..." for not being stupid enough to go to Penn State."
