Just When You Think You've Seen it All ....

Post by THE CHOPS »

I've been watching H.S. Basketball since "1967" religiously & I thought I've seen it all, until last night (1/29/07.

I went to the Southmoreland Gym to take in a game, featuring Southmorelands J.V. Girls squad, against their counterpart "Laurel Highlands".

The game was going along as most games go. Not much scoring & a lot of fouls, because both teams where equal in play. As the game was nearing the fourth quarter, another foul was called on a girl from Laurel Highlands. Nothing out of the norn, except that it was her fifth foul. "No big deal" in most cases... Exception: Laurel Highlands only had five girls dressed for this game. & grant you, they are a tripple~A school, in size.

Well, never seen this in all my years, but the game goes on, & it's now a 28-28 overtime. The refs put up 3:00 minutes on the scoreboard, which is O.K. & Laurel Highlands goes out for a jump ball, with four girls & mostly a mis-match because of a 5 on 4 issue.

The game progresses through time & it's now 32 -32 & another foul has been called on another Laurel Highlands girl, which gives her, her fifth foul. Now! she sits out & the Laurel Highlands team is now playing 5 ~on~ 3. & the score goes into overtime "AGAIN"...

Again the refs put up 1:50 on the scoreboard, & they go out for a jump ball "AGAIN".

The games goes along & a few more points are scored for both teams. The score becomes tied again after this 1:50 clock. It's now tied at 35-35. Both teams went to the foul line three times, & both teams missed, all three times ~~~Yikes !!!!!

Remember now!! This Laurel Highlands team, is only playing with three girls -vs- (5) from Southmoreland's team & hanging right in there with them....

We are now in our third OVERTIME 35 -35 & the clock is set at 45 seconds & another foul is called on a Laurel Highlands girl, which gives her~ her fifth foul. Off she goes & Laurel Highlands is now down to two girls -vs- five of Southmoreland's girls.

What do you think happened NEXT ????????????????????

Well, some how Southmoreland's JV.team managed to get a turnover & score to make it a 37-35 score, & a final. But not before a despiration shot was fired from three point land with '3' seconds left from Laurel Highlands.... Whew !!!!!!

Only in a GIRLS GAME.....

The Referree told me that you can play untill there's no one left, as long as both teams are in agreement. & being that this game was a nail ~bitter. & everyone was still having competitive FUN. They will continue to play. You just can't play more than five at a time...

It was a credit to those (two) laurel highlands girls who finished up the game, & almost beat the 5 on 2 situation.

Southmoreland's coach should be slightly embarrased by "NOT" being able to contain those kinds of odds ( my opinion)...
