District #5/6 are Shaping Up for the Playoffs !!!
Three of the four positions for the Feb. 17th. The Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championships have already been nailed down.
In the boys title game, Section #1 Central Cambria (14-0 L.H.A.C., 10-0 Section #1) will take on Section #2 winner, Westmont Hilltop (15-0, 10-0) for the championship.
The Red Devils (21-1) and the Hilltoppers (21-0) will warm up with a clash this Wednesday in Ebensburg. (I'm taking Westy in a land slide) !!!! Too many good shooters & C.C. will run out of last second shots.... There over there limit....
Central (12-3, 9-1) has claimed the Section #1 title in the girls’ bracket, but because of Westmont’s win over Bishop McCort on Thursday, the Section #2 victor is still up in the air.
The Hilltoppers and Crushers are tied at 9-1 in the section. The second tiebreaker is conference record and both teams are deadlocked at 14-1.
McCort edged Westmont 46-45 in their first regular season game while the Hilltoppers downed the Crushers 73-55 last week, so point differential advantage goes to Westmont. McCort’s 62-46 win over Westmont at the Great Chevy Shootout does not count in the conference.
If the Hilltoppers defeat visiting Central Cambria this Wednesday, they earn the chance to play for their fourth straight title. If Bishop McCort defeats Penn Cambria Wednesday and Westmont loses, the Crushers earn the spot against Central.
The Blairsville and Northern Cambria boys are neck and neck in the Heritage Conference battle, with the Bobcats unbeaten in the league and the Colts’ lone loss to the Bobcats.
The rematch is set for Tuesday at Northern Cambria.
Meanwhile, the Northern Cambria girls have just two losses in the Heritage while Penns Manor and Saltsburg each have three losses. The Colts finish out their schedule with Blairsville, Ligonier Valley, United and Laurel Valley.
In the WestPAC, the Berlin girls remain unbeaten in the South with three games left before the championship game, at noon Feb. 17 at the UPJ Sports Center. Rockwood is two games back.
In the North, the Conemaugh Township girls appear to be in the catbird seat, but they have Conemaugh Valley, North Star and Ferndale right behind.
On the boys side, North Star’s game Wednesday at Conemaugh Township is a vital one for both teams’ hopes of claiming the North section. Windber and Portage are close behind.
In the South, Shade edged Rockwood on Friday and they are both tied for the top spot, followed by Berlin and Shanksville-Stonycreek.
The WestPAC boys title tilt will also be played at U.P.J. immediately after the girls game.
=========================================================
The P.I.A.A. playoffs are still several weeks away, but there have been some tweaks to the usual bracket, including a play~in game in each bracket set for March 6th.
In Class (A), District #6 has four entries for both boys and girls while District #5 gets three.
In Class (AA), District #6 gets three girls slots and three boys while District #5 has two. In Class (AAA), unlike the past few years, District #6 has two positions.
Bring your best game, because it's getting to be crunch time !!!
