Playoffs ready to tip off ..........

The Tribune-Democrat

In addition to the District # 6 basketball playoffs getting under way today, District # 5 also begins its postseason this evening with a Class (AA) boys play-in game.

Fifth-seeded Windber (14-8) travels to No.# 4 Everett to face the Warriors (14-6) at 7 p.m., the time of all first-round District # 5 games.

The winner of the play-in game will journey to top-seeded Tussey Mountain (18-2) for a semifinal on Thursday. The other Thursday semifinal pits No. # 3 North Star (16-4) at No.# 2 Chestnut Ridge (16-4).

The Class (AA) boys title game will be played on March 2nd, at the UPJ Sports Center. The Titans are the defending champions.

On Tuesday, the Class (A) girls will begin with top-seeded Berlin Brothersvalley (15-5) hosting No.# 8 McConnellsburg (7-15) and No.# 5 Rockwood (11-9) at No. #4 Shanksville-Stonycreek (14-8) on the one side of the bracket.

The other side of the bracket has No.# 6 Tussey Mountain (10-10) at No.# 3 Southern Fulton (14-8) and No. #7 Meyersdale (8-14) at No.# 2 Northern Bedford (14-6).

The Class (A) semifinals are set for Thursday at neutral sites with the championship on March 2nd at UPJ.

Conemaugh Township is the defending Class (A) champion, but has moved up to Class (AA) this year.

The Class (AA) girls playoffs open on Tuesday with a play-in game, No. # 5 Windber (8-12) at No.# 4 Chestnut Ridge (11-8).

The play-in winner will face top-seeded Everett (20-0) in one semifinal set for Friday while in the other semifinal, defending Class (AA) champion North Star (16-4) is at Conemaugh Township (21-1). The championship game will be played March 1st at UPJ.

The Class (A) boys begin on Wednesday with top-seeded Conemaugh Township (17-5) hosting No.# 8 Shanksville-Stonycreek (9-13) and No.# 5 Turkeyfoot Valley (14-10) at No. #4 Berlin (13-9).

Also, No. #7 McConnellsburg (10-12) is at No.# 2 Rockwood (13-7) and sixth-seeded Shade (14-10) is at No. #3 Southern Fulton (13-8), the defending district champions.

Semifinals will be held on Friday at neutral sites with the championship on March 1st, at UPJ.

=========================================================================
In District # 6 basketball, the defending boys champions are Blairsville in Class (A), Bald Eagle Area in Class (AA), Greater Johnstown in Class (AAA) and Hollidaysburg in Class (AAAA).

Only the Trojans and Golden Tigers have opportunities to defend their titles since the Bobcats are playing in Class (AA) this year and the Eagles are not participating in the postseason.

The girls defending champs are Conemaugh Valley in Class (A), Westmont Hilltop in Class (AA), Bellefonte in Class (AAA) and Altoona in Class (AAAA).

=========================================================================

The magnitude of a loss suddenly becomes season-ending as the one-and-done postseason gets under way today.

The task for many basketball coaches as the playoffs begin is to keep their teams focused.

Mental toughness will become an especially important asset if a team is to maintain its season goals.

There will be some very exciting games in Dist. V in the next 2-weeks.

I'm gone to see Windber at Evrett tonite and then probably Tussey at SF girls tomorrow.

Some terrific matchups Thursday as tonite's winner will travel to Tussey in Boys and North Star (Coached by former Ridge resident Jack Loya) will be at C.Ridge. Also a probable rematch between SF and NBC at a site to be determined in girls should be a doozy as NBC won both League games by a point.

Lots of unanswered questions. Can Tussey repeat? Can S.Fulton make noise versus all the Westpack squads? Can Everett finally win a home playoff game? Can Ridge advance to the finals and intradistricts?

On the girls end, Everett and Con. Twp. battle is looming, or will N.Star beat Twp. in the semifinals? Can SF and NB both qualify for states (top 3) and can one of them carry the SHL banner to the title?

My picks are Tussey and Con. Twp. in Boys. If Tussey has a downfall I'll predict it would be in a semifinal to Everett or Windber. If they make the final they'll be prepared.

Girls I'll take two surprises in N.Star and Shanksville (who beat SF handily earlier in the season).

Sideling Hill Fan,

That's a good assement. I too, agree with your opinions..

Tussey Mt. is 18-2, But who did they beat ? I'm only asking ? I don't know their schedule at all. {If} Windber beats Everett, & I think they should :roll: Playing at Tussey Mt., will be an almost straight up~hill battle for the Ramblers. Windber has played a fairly good schedule all year. They lost by a few points to larger schools in all their lost battles...

They even went to Pittsburgh a few weeks ago & played Peabody (City League) pretty well, until the 4th quarter when the wheels fell off the cart. :oops: :lol:

Coach Bailey has been around the block & he knows what to do to make things happen, as all good coaches like him, can do.

It should be fun to see what happens. After leaving District #5, it's going to get real ugly for who-ever does make it out into the interdistricts. This is "NOT" a good year to be playing in CLASS (AA)....

Yes, Chops it is scary out there in the state AA bracket, I recall only last year when Tussey won the D5 title only to get absolutely destroyed by Beaver Falls in the first round. I'm sure Tussey remembers that if they would win again.

LHACBIGFAN,

Yes ! being beat by Beaver Falls isn't much fun!!! {BUT} at least Tussey MT. made it there to play them & Yes! they lost to the team from the Western Side Of Pennsylvania who went to Hershey last year. There's always someone out there, that's going to be a little bit better than YOU, on a given night.

Coach Bailey is still worth the price of addmition weather they win or loose :lol:
