CLASS (AA): YORK CATHOLIC 56, TRINITY 48
Iati scorches Shamrocks for "28" points
Thursday, March 01, 2007
The Patriot-News:

There's not much you can do about Jacob Iati.

No matter what kind of defense you throw at the sensational York Catholic junior, he is going to launch his share of dangerous shots. Iati has more than 1,600 career points.

Trinity managed to slow him down in the second half of last night's District D#3-(AA) boys' basketball semifinal at Giant Center.

Unfortunately for the Shamrocks, Iati's teammate Seth Bray slipped through for enough second-half scores to gain the Irish a 56-48 defeat of Trinity.

"Jacob's been great all year," York Catholic coach Jim Senft said. "He got us going and then Seth Bray in the second half was tremendous inside."

Bray, a 6-6 senior, scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half. He was key as the Irish fended off the stubborn Shamrocks' repeated comebacks before the Hershey crowd of 3,496.

"In that fourth quarter we stopped them on defense," Trinity coach Larry Kostelac Jr. said. "There were four or five possessions where it was a five- or three-point game and we came down on the offensive end and couldn't convert. That's the difference between winning and losing."

York Catholic (22-6) will meet Tulpehocken (24-4) for the title at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow at Giant Center.

"The last time I was here Trinity beat us by about 40 or 50," Senft said, recalling a 74-40 spanking administered by the Shamrocks in the 2004 3-AA final.

Said Senft: "It will be a great challenge for us to win the district championship."

The Shamrocks (16-10) head to the third-place game against Milton Hershey, tentatively set at Hempfield. Milton Hershey (17-9) fell to Tulpehocken last night.

"We had a goal of trying to get into the state tournament and we accomplished that goal," Kostelac said.

"We had a very young, inexperienced basketball team this year, went through a whole lot of adversity," Kostelac said. The Shamrocks had a rash of injuries and were without guard O.J. Burnett (illness) last night.

"Our second goal was to win the district championship," Kostelac said. "We can't do that now, we did not get the job done here tonight."

With Trinity guard Josh Miller chasing him for much of the game, Iati finished with 28 points, including four 3-pointers.

He scored 21 of those and made all four of his 3-pointers in the first half.

"They played him really hard," Senft said. "Other people have got to step up and we did that tonight."

Two of Iati's 3-pointers came amidst a little 7-0 run he had to close out the first quarter and open a 16-8 York Catholic lead.

Another Iati 3-pointer increased the Irish lead to 10, 22-12, with 5:44 remaining in the half.

"On ball screens we got a little bit of a hedge in the second half," Kostelac said. "Our kids worked him hard, much better in the second half, and that allowed us to get back into the game."

It was just before the half, with Trinity big man R.J. Dill on the bench with two fouls, that York Catholic's Jon Showers began to find Bray for easy inside scores.

Bray scored on two passes from Showers in the closing minutes of the second quarter. When the horn sounded on the half, the Irish were up 29-20.

The Irish went back to that combination, Showers-to-Bray, as they built their lead to 52-40 with 1:24 left.

"Trinity's kids have a lot of heart and a lot of character and they'll never give up," Senft said. "Those kids never quit."

The Shamrocks rallied one last time on two 3-pointers by Matt Donahue and an inside basket by Tyler Storch. That helped cut York Catholic's lead to six, but Trinity could not get any closer.

"Bray really came up big," Kostelac said. "Bray did a job and we rose to the challenge to get back into position but we just couldn't get over the hump and convert."

Donahue finished with a team-high 15 points and Fran Kuntz scored 14.
