New Castle comeback wins Class (AAAA) girls' basketball title {46-44}

The New Castle girls' basketball team made a furious fourth-quarter comeback win the W.P.I.A.L. Class (AAAA) championship tonight at Duquesne University's Palumbo Center.

New Castle fell behind by six points with 1:23 left in the game, but two 3-pointers by Kara Joseph helped the Red Hurricanes storm back to edge Oakland Catholic, 46-44.

Joseph's first 3-pointer made it 41-39 with 50 seconds left. Oakland Catholic turned the ball over and Joseph hit another 3-pointer from the left wing with 35 seconds left to make it 42-41.

Three free throws stretched the lead to 45-41 before Oakland Catholic's Amanda Sedlack made a three-pointer with 11 seconds left to bring Oakland Catholic within 45-44. New Castle's Jaleesa Sams made one of two free throws with 7.5 seconds remaining before Sedlack drove the length of the court for one last shot. But her 15-foot shot bounced off the back rim.

Sams, a senior guard, led New Castle with 15 points, despite playing with an injured knee. Vickery Lauro had 14 points for Oakland Catholic.

Oakland Catholic had won two W.P.I.A.L. titles in a row. Three years ago, New Castle defeated Oakland Catholic in the championship game.
