P.I.A.A. BOYS:
CLASS (AAAA) PRELIMINARY ROUND:
Moon 68 - Brashear 57
Moon got a scare late from 14-12 Brashear and almost surrendered a 19 point second half lead. However, the 23-4 Tigers hit some big free throws down the stretch and
survived at Chartiers Valley High School in a (AAAA) play-in game 68-57. Trailing 4-1 early in the first quarter, Moon went on a 9-0 run fueled by 6 points by 6-4 junior Brian Walsh and built their margin to 35-20 at the half. Brashear shot only 26 per cent in the first half. That lead ballooned to 19 early in the third period behind an 8 point period by 6-7 Chris Jeannot but sophomore Bruce Thornton's 3 point play with 1:54 left in the game reduced the Tigers's edge to 58-53. The Bulls continued to chop away and got to within 60-57 on two free throws by 6-7 sophomore John Wetzel. But those would be the final points of the night for Brashear. Walsh's coast-to-coast layup made it 62-57 and Moon scored the final 6 points of the game on 4 straight foul shots by Jeannot and two more by point-guard Mike Battles. Walsh finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the winners, who outboarded the Bulls 28-21. Jeannot added 15 points and Tyler Goehring pushed in 14 from the Tiger bench. 6-2 junior Ed Tinker had a game-high 22 for Brashear including 9 of 10 at the charity stripe. The Bulls connected on 18 of 25 at the line but hit only 27 per cent from the field for the game. Each team turned the ball over 13 times. Moon moves on to face fellow #4-(AAAA)W.P.I.A.L. foe and current champion Bethel Park in the P.I.A.A. first round Saturday at 4:30 PM at Chartiers Valley High School.
