Meyersdale Football Gets a New Coach !!!

Post by THE CHOPS »

Raiders stick close to home for new coach...............

The new football coach at Meyersdale Area High School has a familiar face.

Chris Schrock, the Red Raiders boys track coach and assistant football coach since 2001, has been hired to replace Andy Stahl, who resigned in January after four years at the head of the program.

Stahl, who had coached from 2002-2006, finished with a 26-24 record, with back-to-back winning seasons, including an 11-1 campaign in 2006 that carried the Red Raiders to the first round of the PIAA Class (A) playoffs and included a District #5-(A) Championship on a 20-14 overtime~win, over Windber.

Schrock said he plans few changes to the football program.

“Andy got things to the point where we had a pretty good season last year,” Schrock said. “I’m under the philosophy that if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. We’re keeping the staff intact minus one – obviously, Andy. We only have to bring one on board.

“Andy was the offensive coordinator. Wayne Miller, who was an assistant, has moved to offensive coordinator. You’re going to see a few new wrinkles, but the wrinkles you see are not so much because that’s what Wayne wants to do, but because they are suited to the personnel. We lost a lot of kids last year, and we’ll have to change our approach a little to suit the personnel.”

Schrock said there also will be some small defensive changes, and for the same reason.

“One of the hardest things for kids is learning a new system under a new coach,” he said. “They’re not going to have to learn a new system. They’re going to have to get used to me as the new head coach, but they’re not going to have to learn a new system.”

Schrock is a 1991 Meyersdale graduate who played high school football and returned to teach social studies. He also is a graduate of Frostburg State University.

Schrock was at Southern Huntingdon High School for three years and offensive coordinator for two seasons. He has been the defensive coordinator for his five years at Meyersdale, where he spent one year as a junior high assistant.

“When I played high school ball, I was coached by Dennis Stahl and Fred DiPasquale, and they were huge influences,” Schrock said. “When I coached at Southern Huntingdon, I coached under Frank Baker. Also at that time at Southern Huntingdon, Dan Foor – who is the head coach at Northern Bedford – was the defensive coordinator. Those guys were very instrumental in helping me get to where I am now, just learning the game of football.

“Had it not been for those four guys, I don’t know where I’d be right now. I certainly would not be a head coach at Meyersdale. They taught me a lot over the years.”
