P.I.A.A. Basketball Playoffs: Wednesday Recaps
3/21/2007 -

After being shutout in the state Semifinals on Tuesday, the combo WPIAL/Pittsburgh City League tasted some success in the Final Four on Wednesday. While Jeannette boys and the Moon girls hoop teams saw their seasons come to an end, Schenley boys, Aliquippa boys, Hopewell girls and North Catholic girls all advanced on the PAth to Penn State to the finish line this weekend at Happy Valley. Here are the recaps from PIAA Semifinals Wednesday.

P.I.A.A. BOYS:

Class (AAAA) Semifinals:

Schenley 85 - Harrisburg 62

So much for the showdown at Altoona High School on Wednesday night. The Spartans scored 12 of the games first 16 points and jumped out to a 25-11 lead after one quarter as they never looked back en route to a "23" point rout of the Cougars. With Delaware recruit Alphonso Dawson is early foul trouble, Harrisburg could never get untracked as Schenley extended their lead by halftime to 45-29. The Spartans built up a 26-point lead in the third quarter before putting the game on cruise control. Schenley was led by junior Deandre Kane's game-high 23 points while DeJuan Blair and D.J. Kennedy scored 19 each and Greg Blair added 15 points as the Spartans improve to 28-3 and will face Chester in the P.I.A.A. Boys Class (AAAA) state title game Saturday night at 8:00pm at the Bryce Jordan Center in Happy Valley.

Class (AA) Semifinals:

Aliquippa 69 - Jeannette 48

It was Déjà vu for the P.I.A.A. Western Final as the Aliquippa Quips beat the Jeanette Jayhawks for the second time in final’s competition this season to advance to the state title game with a 69-48 victory. The Quips and Jayhawks hooked up in the W.P.I.A.L. finals with the same outcome. Aliquippa held Terelle Pryor to just "8" points, shooting 4 of 7 from the field. Herb Pope, the New Mexico State recruit led the Quips in front of a packed house that included his soon to be college head coach, Reggie Theus and new Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Several other NCAA coaches were on hand mostly to see Pryor the heralded junior who has several offers to
play both football and basketball at the next level. Aliquippa’s Antonio Reddic scored 19 and Jonathan Baldwin scored 17. Quips head coach, Marvin Emerson after the game gave his ball club an “A-plus” for their efforts on the boards in which they out rebounded Jeanette 36-13. The Quips shot 49% from the field en-route to the win that puts them in the state finals which will be a rematch of a January 20th game versus Philadelphia Prep Charter in which Aliquippa won 78-70. Tip-off at 2 PM on the MSA sports
network.

P.I.A.A. GIRLS:

Class (AAA) Semifinals:

Hopewell 55 - Moon 33

A tale of two halves in the P.I.A.A. Girls (AAA) Western Championships, but the outcome was as it has been the last seven times before as Hopewell defeated Moon 55-33 to
advance to the state finals for a chance at back-to-back state titles. This was the second year in a row the section rivals met twice in the postseason in both the W.P.I.A.L. and the P.I.A.A. playoffs having met in the P.I.A.A. Western Finals both
years. The Lady Vikes were led by Jordan Zuppe’s 15, Sarah Haluska had 11, Joyce and Becky Novacek each added 8 a piece and Hannah Hunter hit 7 free throws. The Lady Tigers were led by Becca Pollacks 13, but highlighting the box score was the 2 points by Delaware recruit Grace Palucis. The 2 points came when she hit 2 free throws with 1:27 left and the game at hand for Hopewell. Hopewell held Moon without a field goal until the 3:23 mark of the fourth quarter en-route to their 24th consecutive win and 30th win overall compared to just 2 losses. Villa Maria, Malvern will be the opponent Saturday from the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University with a 6 PM tip-off heard right here on the MSA Sports Network.

Class (A) Semifinals:

North Catholic 52 - Claysburg-Kimmell 37

It will be District #7 against District #6 in the P.I.A.A. Girls Class (A) title game after North Catholic and Bishop Guilfoyle were winners in the state Semifinals on Wednesday night. At Pitt-Johnstown, the Trojanettes scored the final six points of the first quarter to take a 14-8 lead after one. North Catholic extended their lead in the second quarter by outscoring the Bulldogs 7-5 to take a 21-13 halftime lead. The game opened up a bit in the second half, however Claysburg-Kimmell could not make a serious run as North Catholic ended up with a 15-point victory. Amy Longo led ther way for the Trojanettes with a game-high 20 points, including 10 in the third quarter. April Austin scored seven points in the final quarter to end up with 12 points.
