2006-2007 MSA SPORTS BOYS ALL-NETTERS .............................
3/28/2007 -

Versatility would be the operative word when describing the No. 1 attribute of the MSA All-Netters boys’ basketball all-star team. The five players on the first team played a number of different positions on the court.

Terrelle Pryor of Jeannette played just about every position for his team. Herb Pope of Aliquippa is the tallest player of the group at 6 feet 9, but can take a rebound and go coast-to-coast with the dribble.

Albert Gallatin’s Jawaan Alston and Aliquippa’s Jonathan Baldwin both have good size, but both also hit many shots from the perimeter this year. Moon’s Brian Walsh can play shooting guard or point guard.

Here is a look at the versatile bunch, plus a glance at the second team.

MSA SPORTS FIRST TEAM:

Herb Pope, Aliquippa

There hasn’t been a player with Pope’s size and skills in the WPIAL in a long time. A 6-9 senior forward, he is ranked among the top 50 players in the country by scouting services. This season, he has averaged 19.9 points a game for the two-time WPIAL Class AA champion Quips.

“You just don’t find 6-9 kids who can handle the ball and move like he can,” said Aliquippa coach Marvin Emerson.
Pope came to Aliquippa as a sophomore and scored more than 1,000 points. He averaged 18 points and 15 rebounds as a junior. He signed with New Mexico State during the NCAA’s early-signing period last November.

Terrelle Pryor, Jeannette

The most highly-ranked and highly-recruited two-sport athlete in the WPIAL in decades. He is ranked among the top 50 juniors in the country in both football and basketball and has scholarship offers from many Division I colleges in both sports. Two scouting services rank him the No. 1 junior football player in the country. He is a quarterback-defensive back.

Football seems to be his best sport in the future, but this 6-6 junior guard-forward also is a force on the basketball court. A starter since his freshman season, he is averaging 21 points a game for the Jayhawks, who were runners-up to Aliquippa in WPIAL Class AA. He can play point guard, but also post up defenders on the post. Had a number of triple doubles this year.

Jonathan Baldwin, Aliquippa

Baldwin, a 6-6 junior forward, has been on Aliquippa’s basketball varsity since his freshman season and has played in the WPIAL Class AA championship game every year. He helped the Quips win their second consecutive title this season. He is Aliquippa’s leading scorer at 21.3 points a game. He also is a force on the boards and can throw down thunderous dunks.

Baldwin also is a standout two-sport athlete (football and basketball). A receiver-defensive end, he recently was offered a football scholarship by Miami. He also has football offers from Pitt, Michigan and Notre Dame, among others. He has a basketball offer from Marquette.
“He might end up being the most-heavily recruited athlete we’ve ever had here,” said Mike Zmijanac, Aliquippa’s football coach and athletic director.

Jawaan Alston, Albert Gallatin

A 6- 8 senior, Alston helped Albert Gallatin to a WPIAL championship game for the first time since 1968. The Colonials made it to the Class AAAA title game before losing to Bethel Park.

Alston was the primary force in Albert Gallatin’s run to the title. He averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds a game. He was a force on the inside, but also had the ability to hit outside shots.

Alston finished his career with more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. He already has signed with Buffalo of the Mid-American Conference.

Brian Walsh, Moon

A 6-foot-3 junior guard, Walsh averaged 16 points a game for the Tigers in helping them to the WPIAL and PIAA Class AAAA playoffs. He has been a starter since his sophomore season. He is a good-sized guard who seems comfortable playing shooting guard or point guard.

Walsh is one of the most heavily recruited junior guards in the state. After an impressive showing at a camp last summer, a number of major colleges became interested. He already has scholarship offers from Pitt, Duquesne, Xavier, St. Joseph’s and Maryland, among others. St. Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli was in attendance at Moon’s game against Schenley last Saturday when Walsh scored 28 points.

MSA SPORTS SECOND TEAM:

Josh Arnold, Monesen

This 6-3 guard was good as a junior, averaging 19 points a game. But he took his game to another level as a senior, leading the WPIAL in scoring at 31 points a game.

Mike Sherry, Chartiers Valley

A sharp-shooting, 6-1 senior guard who led the Colts to the WPIAL Class AAA championship before losing to West Allegheny. He averaged 25.6 points a game and finished his career with 1,703 points.

Steve Swiech, Elizabeth Forward

A force on the inside, this 6-9 senior center averaged 25 points a game this season and finished his career with 1,918 points. Has signed with Akron of the Mid-American Conference.

Mike Shanahan, Norwin

A versatile 6-5 junior guard-forward who averaged 17 points a game and helped Norwin win a playoff game for the first time since 1994. Has over 1,000 career points and a few Division I colleges are interested.

Antonio Reddic, Aliquippa

A tall guard at 6-3, Reddic is a scorer and excellent defender for the Quips. Averaging 19.6 points a game for the Quips. A senior, Reddic also a standout defensive back in football.
