W.P.I.A.L. Coaching Changes: Connellsville Football and Seton Girls Hoops

3/27/2007 -

While a WPIAL football coaching vacancy has been filled in Fayette County, an attractive girls basketball coaching job has opened up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Connellsville High School has a new football coach and Seton-LaSalle begins the search for a new girls basketball coach.

* Third time was the charm for new Connellsville football coach Lou DeSimone, who had applied for the Falcons head coaching position on two other occasions.

DeSimone, who taught at Connellsville High School for 37 years before retiring in 2003, had a nine-year run as head coach at Brownsville High School from 1983 to 1991 where he was 65-20 with four playoff trips for the Falcons.

DeSimone also served as an assitant coach at Connellsville, Geibel, Uniontown and Brownsville where he was an assitant the past two years.

DeSimone takes over for Tom Dolde, who in two years as coach of the Falcons was a combined 6-13. Connellsville was 5-5 and made the WPIAL playoffs in 2005, but they slipped to 1-8 overall this past fall.

* John Fisher has stepped down as head coach of the Seton-LaSalle girls basketball program after two years as head coach.

The Rebels qualified for both the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs in both seasons under Fisher, who ends up with a final record of 42-12.

This past season was one of mixed emotions for the girls at Seton-LaSalle. They dominated in the regular season and finished with a mark of 22-2 and 12-0 in winning Class AA Section 3. However the postseason was not as kind to the top-seed Rebels as they were upset in the Quarterfinals of the WPIAL playoffs 64-33 by Bishop Canevin, then lost in a Preliminary Round contest in the PIAA playoffs 49-47 to Everett.

Seton-LaSalle officials say the search for a new head coach will begin immediately with the hopes of having a new girls basketball coach hired by early May.
