Pitt MD Runner Sam Bair on running a sub-4:00 mile...

Post by WPIAL~Titan »

Pitt runner and Shaler Area Alum Sam Bair speaks in a recent article in the PG about the 4:00 mile...A great story about Sam and his father, who happen to be neighbors of mine:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07131/785180-139.stm

In today's race, Sam placed 7th out of 16 runners in a star-studded field that included 4 former US Olympians and several former NCAA Champs. Sam ran a 4:05, as the runners' quest for a fast mile in Ithaca, NY was done in by 20mph headwind on the backstraight and a "slow" rabbit who took the pace out in 2:02 for the first 1/2 mile (He was to run 1:55 or 1:56.)

Sam has qualified for the NCAA D1 East regional Championships for 1500m which will be run in 2 weeks. If Sam makes the final, he's a virtual lock to be selected for the NCAA D1 Track and Field Championships, which will be held in Sacramento, CA June 9-13.

Last year, Sam earned All-America honors at 1500m, and he was an All-American at the mile indoors as well this past winter.

Update...

Sam qualified for the NCAA Championships at 1500 meters. He has the 14th best time of 27 qualifiers at 3:42.36.

By the way, I watched Sam do an absolute monster workout yesterday...Here it is:

-2 mile warmup jog

-2x800 meters at 1:58.4 and 1:55.7 with a 7 minute rest between

-7 minute rest after the 2nd 800m (1:55.7)

-3x400 meters in 57.1, 56.4, and 54.8 with a 4 minute rest between each rep

-4x200 meters in 27, 26, 25.5, and 24.7 with a 3 minute rest between each

-2 mile cooldown jog

I'd say he's ready to run well at Nationals.

Yes, it was unreal...I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. This is the 2nd such workout I have watched Sam run in the last few years.

The best part about the workout is that Sam's form is so good that it looked like he was jogging (both 800s looked like a walk in the park.)Following the workout, he said he could've run even more 200s and 400s at race pace (under :60 per quarter.)

Sam is a great kid from a great family, who is as down to Earth as can be. Here's hoping he earns All-American status again this year at 1500m.
