Cam Saddler plays running back, defensive back, returns punts and kickoffs for the Gateway football team. On Thursday night, we learned he could handle another job.
Water boy.
Saddler did not play in Thursday’s big game against McKeesport because of a pulled left hamstring. But during every timeout, there was Saddler on the field with the water bottles, handing them out to teammates – and sometimes to officials.
Saddler is one of the most enthusiastic, energetic and free-spirited players in the WPIAL.
“Hey, it was the only way I could get on the field, being the waterboy,” Saddler said. “I figured if I couldn’t play, this would at least get me on the field. It was my only chance to talk to my boys.”
Saddler expects to miss a few more games with the injury. Gateway’s next two games are non-conference.
“I could go, but I wouldn’t be 100 percent,” Saddler said. “Coach said there is no point of us losing you for the whole year because the next two weeks are non-conference.”
Where the Prospects Are
Gateway was highly ranked coming into the season. Maybe here’s a reason why: The Gators now list nine juniors and seniors as having scholarship offers from Division I colleges. Some of the players have offers from only MAC schools, but they are offers.
The players are:
Saddler, DE-LB Shayne Hale, WR-QB-DB Leon Green, RB-DB Eric Livsey, OL eric Warning, WR-DB Jon Pryor, OL-DL Bill Kemp, WR-DB Corey Brown, LB-TE Dorian Bell.
Brown and Bell are both juniors. One scouting service recently came out with rankings for the class of 2009 and had Bell and Brown in the top 50 in the country.
More Recruiting
Central Catholic linebacker was recently offered a scholarship by Pitt.
Over 1,000
The Greensburg Salem football played its 1,000th game in school history last week. The school will celebrate its 1,000th game at next week’s home game.
Greensburg Salem is one of only a few high schools in the WPIAL that have played 1,000 games. Greensburg Salem’s record is 643-318-39. They are second all-time in the WPIAL in victories, behind New Castle, which has 667. Jeannette is third with 966.
Participation Numbers
From the did you know department:
For the first time, more than 3 million girls participated in high school sports around the country last year. At least that’s according to the High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of Stat High School Associations.
The survey has been conducted every year since 1971 and it asks every state in the country to participate. Through the survey, it was determined that 54.2 percent of students enrolled in high schools participate in athletics of some kind.
Also, the boys’ participation total last year of 4,321,103 is the highest since 4,367,442 participated in 1977-78.
Soccer gained the most female participants in 2006-07 while 11-man football gained the most in boys.
Basketball is the most popular sport for girls with 456,967 participants, followed by outdoor track (441,181) and volleyball (405,832).
Eleven-player football is first in boys with 1,104,548. Basketball is second (556,269) and track and field third (544,180).
Where Are They Now?
*Beaver graduate Rory Nicol is the starting tight end for Ohio State. Woodland Hills graduate Devon Lyons, a receiver, is not listed on the Buckeyes’ two-deep depth chart.
*It hasn’t gotten much attention in the Pittsburgh media, but McKeesport graduate Swin Cash is closing in on another WNBA championship with the Detroit Shock. The Shock are ahead of Phoenix, 1-0, in the final series. Cash is a starting forward for the Shock and is seeking her third WNBA title.
