Girls Hoops Chatter in the State...
The Patriot-News...
This wasn't an easy choice but a necessary one......
Missing from The Patriot-News preseason state girls' basketball rankings are a pair of defending state champions, Cheltenham in (AAAA) and Hopewell in (AAA).
Cheltenham is part of a normally strong District #1 contingent of familiar teams oddly absent from the rankings picture. Council Rock North and Upper Dublin are the other two programs in District #1 that are going through a youth movement.
Only Downingtown East and Conestoga from District #1 make an appearance in the Class (AAAA) gaggle of "16" teams. Upper St. Clair from District# 7 gets the preseason nod at No. #1 for the big schools.
District #1 is well-represented in the Class (AAA) rankings. Mount St. Joseph and P.I.A.A. runner-up Villa Maria Academy hold down the Nos. #1 and #2 spots.
The (AAA) rankings feature an unusual seven teams that were not part of the final top "10" when the season concluded last March.
P.I.A.A. Class (AA) runner-up Villa Maria from District #10 is the easy pick as the preseason No. #1. Scott Dibble's club didn't lose a single starter and is the team to beat in that class.
Two-time defending state champion York Catholic is still around. Yes, the Fighting Irish graduated their top two players, but they have three starters back and we hear there's a talented freshman in the fold.
Another P.I.A.A. runner-up, North Catholic, is the choice for preseason No.# 1 in the small-school category. Right behind them are two familiar schools, Pottsville Nativity BVM and Marian Catholic from District #11. Do these programs ever have a down year? Doesn't seem like it.
On the local front, there are plenty of Mid-Penn Conference teams throughout the rankings. Harrisburg and Central Dauphin are No's.# 2 and 3 in Class (AAAA). And Gettysburg, with four starters back, slides in at No.# 5 in Class (AAA).
Finally, Trinity's quick guards will still be a force in Class (AA), and the Shamrocks check in as the preseason No. #3.
The state rankings take a five-week break to let the dust settle before we unveil our first regular-season rankings in early January.
