Defense paves way for Windber..........

From The Tribune-Democrat

WINDBER — The host Windber Ramblers played suffocating defense on Saturday night to capture the Windber Area Athletic Boosters Association crown with a 35-20 victory over Ferndale.

Windber (2-0) limited the Yellow Jackets (1-1) to just a single point in the first quarter of the championship game.

“We had about "20" shots that we missed underneath the basket in the second half,” Ferndale coach Mae Altman. “Windber is a very good team, they play very good defense. There are going to be a lot of tough teams in the WestPAC.”

Tournament M.V.P. Jen Rasko led the Ramblers with "12" points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Alexis Lapinsky had a team-high '11" rebounds and seven steals for the Ramblers.

The Yellow Jackets did not have any players reach double figures in scoring, but Brittany Eisnhuth did score nine.

“It took our offense a bit to catch up with our defense,” Windber girls coach Rich Price said. “It was nice to come out on top against a team like Ferndale. It was an exciting result for the Windber girls.”

Richland (1-1) topped Laurel Valley (0-2) 50-45 in a physical consolation game that saw the squads combine for "52" fouls, and miss a combined "41" free throws. Whew !!!!!!

“We need to get things under control and play better defense,” Richland coach Rob Eckenrod said. “It’s a learning process for us.”

Lauren Brant led Richland with "14" points while teammate Gena Tessari added "11". Richland started to pull away midway through the fourth quarter after playing nip-and-tuck basketball with Laurel Valley through most of the game.

Laurel Valley’s Meghan Cassidy had "10" points to spur her squad. Grace Altimus pulled down "20" rebounds.
