TOTAL DOMINATION: Serra Destorys Kane to Advance to Hershey......

Friday December 07, 2007, 11:07 PM

CLARION, Pa. - Right from the onset of the P.I.A.A. Class "A" Western Championship game, one recurring theme was becoming painfully obvious. It could be summed up in as little as 4 words:

Kane was grossly overmatched.

That's putting it nicely, because Serra Catholic showed no mercy to the District #9 champions.

Serra (15-0) ran for "378" yards and held the Wolves (14-1) to just "39" yards rushing en route to a 48-21 victory at an icy Clarion University's Memorial Stadium Friday evening.

With the win, the Eagles will take on the winner of the Bloomsburg - Steelton-Highspire game for the P.I.A.A. state championship in Class "A" next Friday at 1 pm from Hershey.

Unlike its previous (2) games against Springdale and North Star, the Eagles came out firing in the first quarter.

Isaiah Jackson (18 rushes, 70 yards) got the scoring parade started with a 2-yard run to give SC a 7-0 lead. The 70-yard performance allowed Jackson to eclipse the 1,600 yard rushing mark for the season.

Chris Loving scored the next (2) Eagle touchdowns on runs of 1 and 46 yards, respectively, building Serra's lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter. Loving started the game with 4 rushes for 122 yards and 2 scores, but only finished with 127 yards rushing on 11 carries, not because Kane found a way to limit him, but because of some injuries and wear-and-tear.

Kane scored the next "14" points in the game, breaking the double-zeros with a 7-yard Dustin Moran touchdown run to put Kane within 14 at 21-7.

The D#9 champs narrowed the margin to just "7" when Matt Mix hauled in a 57-yard pass from Zach Anderson (23-of-43, 271 yards, 2 TD, 3 ~INT) to make the score 21-14.

But the ensuing kickoff proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back - if you looked at it from a Kane perspective.

Cam Olsen returned the ensuing kickoff "88" yards for a touchdown, and Serra stole back the momentum and took a 28-14 lead.

Kane's comeback had been all-for-naught, but the Wolves kept playing till the final whistle.

Serra scored "3'' more touchdowns, all TJ Heatherington runs, to ice the game. Heatherington ran for 181 yards and scoring runs of 28, 20, and 13 yards, while going 4-of-6 through the air for 70 more yards.

Kane's final touchdown of its magical run came when Anderson found Mike Punk down the home sideline for a 60-yard score to cut the deficit to 35-21.

While the "21" points were the most a District #9 team has ever scored in a Western Finals game, it offered little consolation to the Wolves. The previous high for points in a Western Finals came in "1991", when Smethport lost to Rochester 29-20.

Serra finished the night with "448" yards of offense, including "378" on the ground to go along with "19" first downs.

Kane finished with "310" total yards on the night, "273" of which came through the air. The majority of Kane's "12" first downs came after the outcome had been decided. The Wolves only had "3 "first downs in the first "24" minutes.
