A Pre~view Of the Jeannette -Vs- Greyhounds Game
WESTERN FINALS PREVIEW - JEANNETTE JAYHAWKS-Vs- The Hounds......
We've already established the fact that Jeannette is an offensive juggernaut putting up points at a record-setting pace.
We've already established that Jeannette may be quite possibly one of the best Class (AA) teams ever fielded.
Most people have even gone as far as to crown Jeannette the "State Champions".
Jeannette will continue its playoff run with a trip up Interstate #79 to Slippery Rock University for the Class "AA" Western Final against a familiar foe: the Wilmington Greyhounds (13-1).
Kickoff of the game from Slippery Rock's N. Kerr Thompson Stadium is slated for Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.
Jeannette, which has won "28" of its last "30" games, defeated Wilmington 28-7 in last year's (AA) western final at Hempfield High School in Greensburg.
Jeannette dominated the Greyhounds last year in just about every phase of the football game, holding the Hounds to "66" yards of offense and just "7" points. Jeannette's defense, always lightning quick and allowing 7.4 points per game, will be ready for what Wilmington throws at them.
Defensively, Jeannette is one of the best. Offensively, Jeannette isn't too bad, either.
The Jayhawks are averaging "55" points per game, having scored "770" points this season, easily surpassing the state standard set by Southern Columbia of "747" points a year ago.
And, of course, when you think of Jeannette, you think of Terrell Pryor, the quarterback who runs, passes, and just downright perplexes opposing defenses directing a spread offense and wowing them with his prowess.
Pryor has run for 1,531 yards and 29 touchdowns. He's thrown for 1,585 yards and 19 touchdowns. Pryor just surpassed the 4,000 yard career passing mark last weekend against Karns City, giving him 4,024 passing yards and 40 touchdowns in his 3-year career.
He's 118 yards shy of 4,000 yards rushing at 3,882. Pryor has run for 68 career touchdowns. 1,889 of his career rushing yards have come in 13 postseason games, where he boasts an 11-2 record.
In his last (7) playoff games, dating back to last year's Wilmington game, Pryor has at least "3" touchdowns per game. In that (7) game stretch, he's had a hand in "26" touchdowns for the Jayhawks.
But with Pryor in the backfield, it's easy to forget about the other weapons the Hawks possess.
"Mr. Versatility," running back/receiver/defensive back Jordan Hall, has run for 691 yards and 16 touchdowns while catching 23 passes for 653 yards and (8) additional scores. Hall has "25" total touchdowns this season for the Hawks, and he's only a junior.
Fullback Michael Matt missed much of last year, including the state title game, with an injury, and he's returned to run for 410 yards and (4) scores on 53 carries. Matt, also a linebacker on Jeannette's defense, has received some looks from the University of Tennessee.
James Derry, who filled in for Matt while he was injured last season, has quietly chipped in to the spread system with 511 yards and "8" touchdowns on (63) carries.
Jeannette has just been wickedly scary this postseason. Wilmington should take note of the following statistics:
Jeannette has scored "256" points this postseason.
Karns City was the only team to hold Jeannette below (40) points this season.
Jeannette has mercy-ruled 13 of 14 opponents. The only team Jeannette didn't mercy rule was Aliquippa, and the Jayhawks dropped 70 points on the Quips.
Jeannette scored (61) points in the W.P.I.A.L. title game, just "3" points shy of tying the all-time record of (64) set back in "1949".
Tune in to see if Pryor gets to 4,000 yards rushing for his brilliant career and if Jeannette can get the 30 points they need to reach 800 for the season, something no P.I.A.A. team has ever done.
And if you get a chance, swing on by Thompson Stadium Saturday afternoon.
You'll witness some history.
