You'll Thank Me In The Morning (Vol. 1)
Hello all. Coming to you live from Shippensburg, PA it's You'll Thank Me in the Morning with your host, C-DeBiceps!
One game tonight:
Pacific Life Holiday Bowl
11 Arizona State vs. 19 Texas (-2.5)
On paper, this is by far the best match up of all the bowls. There have been some very entertaining games thus far, and this should.. SHOULD.. continue the shootout trend started by Utah/Navy and Purdue/CMU. Lets look at what each team has at stake:
Arizona State
The Sundevils sort of came from nowhere this season, going from the birthplace of the Antichrist (Jake Plummer) to BCS contender in a matter of months. The X factor: Rudy Carpenter.. PSYCH! Dennis Erickson has somehow brought 10 victories to the desert, which isnt a huge suprise seeing his track record with the U and Oregon State, but no one (not even Craig "I'm a Head to Head Guy" James) could have seen (even though that egotistic lunkhead will probably tell Doug Flutie he predicted it in February). Anyway, while the country was in chaos watching every viable contender lose games, ASU was quietly winning games in the second toughest confernce in the country. They landed themselves a top 10 showdown with Oregon in the Autzen Zoo, and while they hung around early, the Dennis Dixucks proved thier worth and ended the Sundevils BCS title hopes, or so we thought. The rest of the country continued to lose, and with their only loss coming against a credible opponent, ASU had a glimmer of hopes to stay in the hunt for New Orleans. Enter USC. Finally healthy and totally awesome, the Trojans came to town and absoultly demolished the undermanned Devils (really makes me wish USC wasnt injury plagued early, as they took alot of garbage for tight games. however, that still is no excuse for the Stanford loss). Arizona State closed out their season with a victory over a somewhat inspired Arizona team, and sat and waited for their anticipated selection to a BCS game. The BCS brass once again urniated on the entire country, bringing Kansas to the party (who will beat vtech, but that's another story) and leaving the Devils with an invitation to the Holliday Bowl.
For Arizona State, it's simple, prove the BCS selection committee was wrong and to the country that you are establishing yourself as a credible program. One problem with that: Teams with "disapointing" bids dont always fare so well (See #4 Cal/Texas Tech 2005 and Michigan's performance vs. USC in last year's Rose Bowl). BREAK THE CYCYLE ASU! Even though Rudy Carpenter is the love child of Pete Gonzales and John Beck, he's still got the system and the weapons to get it done. The issue? Protection. Carpenter is sacked something like 4 times per game, 3rd worst in D1A (thank you, Jesse Palmer). So that's the word for you, ASU, Protection. Protect your QB and Protect your rep, and wash your hands of the affiliation to Jake The Snake.
Texas:
Ok, i thought it was a bad dream. That reoccuring nightmare we've all had. Maybe the one where the same guy is chasing you, or you repeatedly are put in situations where you are near death and awaken just before you come to your demise. It was worse. The Texas Longhorns once again were ranked in the Preseason top 5, and once again come into their bowl game ranked in the Teens. I am a fan of Colt Mccoy. I really think he has talent, and he bares a striking resemblance to my 11 year old cousin, Tristan. Anyway, Texas did what Texas does, and that's beat down crap opponents, Lose to Oklahoma, and Fold against mediocre competition. 2 Things UT cannot do: 1: Lose to any team in Kansas. 2: Lose to any team in Kansas 2 years in a row. Guess what, it happend. To make matters absolutly worse, the Hookem's also lost to A&M, who lost by 3 dozen to a below average (tear has fallen from my eye) Hurricanes. A&M hasnt been this disapointing since Reggie McNeal was at the helm (2 years ago, oops), and Texas made it 2 straight to their instate rivals. Perhaps McNeal really was a curse for the Aggies (see Georgia Tech/Reggie Ball 2003-06). Even through all of that, Texas is a victory away from their 7th consecutive 10 win season (the big 12 really is that bad). Only Florida state (14) and Miami (8) have more dimes in a row.
Texas will be without giagantic elastic spider squirrel Limas Sweed, but still has Jamaal Charles, the Colt, and whoever plays wideout. It's this easy, Texas: Win, and cement your place in history. Also, win and you up your Credible Win total for the year to .5 (Texas is currently at -.5 because even though they beat Texas Tech, had -1.5, missing .5 for the losses and 1 for eeking one out against Arkansas State).
So here it is: Credibility vs. History in the Holliday Bowl
The Pick:
Even though i bashed it for years, the Pac 10 has emerged as the second best conference in the country. While defense still lacks, these guys know how to put up numbers, and any conference with Pete Carrol, Erickson, and Beloti coaching in it deserves respect. Even dissapointing Cal wiped the floor with Tennessee and Washington handed Boise its first loss in 48737 games.
The same cannot be said for the Big 12. The big 12 North is quite possibly.. no, IS a worse brand of football than the Mountain West (I still dont care dude, Kansas is garbage and Mizzou remembered they were Mizzou and got blown the freak out against a team they were supposed to contend with on a neutral field). I'm convinced Air Force, BYU and Utah could all make it out of that division bowl eligible.
That being said, for some reason, Vegas has Texas favored. What does this mean? Looks to me like a sucker bet. There isnt any logical reason why Texas would be favored, being that ASU has a better record against tougher competition. HOWEVER, logic never works. Intangibles do. Arizona state should lose this game. They've been sitting on a donut for the weeks following the BCS selection after what the committee did to them, and this game should be a let down. I dont believe Erickson lets his boys fall the same way Trefford and Carr let their teams. Pac 10 Pride!

Re: You'll Thank Me In The Morning (Vol. 1)
I don't have time right this second to read this, but i know it is real great and I will read it shortly. I just wnted to say that this is also the best bowl matchup, and the only game I really looked forward to seeing.
I'm heading to San Antonio Saturday for that PSU game, which is probably Paterno's last bowl game, because there is no way in hell Lydell Sargent and Dwight Clark are leading this team to anywhere other than a 3-9 season.

Re: You'll Thank Me In The Morning (Vol. 1)
My man, by sucker bet i meant ASU SHOULD have been favored. Better record over better competition. Vegas had Texas favored so people would think they had a sure thing in taking ASU. I was one of those suckers. Picks will be posted shortly.
