3/2/2008 - From M.S.A. Sports.....

Terrelle Pryor's drawing power was evident again at the W.P.I.A.L. basketball championships. The Class (AA) championship game between Beaver Falls and Pryor's Jeannette team last Saturday at Duquesne University's Palumbo Center was essentially a sellout.

Palumbo officials stopped selling tickets after the first quarter of the game. The Class (AAA) girls' final was after the Jeannette-Beaver Falls game, but tickets weren't sold for that game until people started leaving the Jeannette game.

Jeannette won and Pryor had "39" points,"24" rebounds and "10" blocked shots. Over the years, the Class (AA) boys' final has attracted some large crowds because of games like Beaver Falls-Aliquippa, or Sto-Rox-Aliquippa. But the Jeannette-Beaver Falls game might have been the topper. People were standing in the aisles watching the game.

The Jeannette-Beaver Falls game was the second of three games for the first session Saturday. The other two were girls' games. According to the W.P.I.A.L., total paid attendance for the games was 5,999. Most of those had to be in the house for the Jeannette-Beaver Falls game.

The tripleheader Friday (two boys' games and one girls' game) also was well-attended with a crowd of 4,606. The doubleheader Saturday night (Class (AAAA) girls final and (AAA) boys final) was not well-attended as 1,801 showed up.

"Overall, it was a great weekend," said W.P.I.A.L. Executive Director Tim O'Malley. "Session No.# 3 was a little disappointing, but session No. # 1 Friday and the Saturday afternoon session were excellent."

Ratings Game...........

The Harrisburgh Patriot News does boys' basketball rankings for the state, but based on classification. Ever wonder who has the best team in the state, regardless of class? Well, Middle Atlantic Sports and llhoops.com has been doing state rankings for years, regardless of classification. Here is the top 10:

1. Chester 28-1
2. Reading 30-0
3. Norristown 28-1
4. Pennsbury 27-2
5. Roman Catholic 17-5
6. Communications Tech 26-3
7. Strawberry Mansion 19-5
8. Imhotep Charter 24-3
9. Pittsburgh Central Catholic 23-4
10. Schenley 25-2

Notice there isn't a Western Pennsylvania team ranked in the top eight. McKeesport is No.# 11. Interestingly, Jeannette is No.# 16 and Beaver Falls No.# 17.

Record Stuff

The No.# 1 team in the above rankings set an impressive record last weekend. The Chester boys' team defeated Norristown, 61-47, in the District #1 championship.

Chester, which lost to Schenley in last year's P.I.A.A. final, has now won a record seven District #1 titles in a row and "36" consecutive district playoff games. Lower Merion set the old consecutive playoff win record and consecutive championship record from 1930-44.

Chester is 28-1 and features 6-5 forward Nasir Robinson, who signed with Pitt in November.

By the Clock..........................

During the past few seasons, we've heard fans complain about how low-scoring some Class (AAAA) games are. Would a shot clock help in this matter?

Well, did you know that a 35-second shot clock is used in seven states, including New York and California. Wonder if Pennsylvania would ever consider it?

Public and Private................... Oh No !!!!!!!!!

The debate over whether private schools have an advantage over public schools in athletics is everywhere. One large part of California is trying to do something about it.

The Southern Section league in California has made a proposal to have separate playoffs for private and public schools. The Orange County-based league has 350 public schools and 218 private.

It will be interesting to see if this passes.

Matthews Resigns....................................

Bernie Matthews, a longtime mens basketball coach at St. Vincent, lasted only two years on the high school level. Matthews recently resigned as boys' coach at Penn-Trafford.

In two seasons at Penn-Trafford, Matthews had a 12-34 record. He was St. Vincent College's head coach from 1968-2003 and won "505" games there. Former Windber Ramblers coach: Mike Rodrigiuez may put his hat in the ring next ?

One of the Best?

With his dominance the past few seasons, doesn't Shady Side Academy's Trevor Scheid have to be one of the WPIAL's best swimmers in recent history?

Scheid won two individual events and two relay titles at the WPIAL championships this week. He set a record in all four events.

Look for Scheid to break records at the PIAA meet also. The PIAA record time in the 500 freestyle is 4:29.57. He swam 4:24.24 at the WPIAL meet. He also will go after the 200 freestyle record, which he set last year.

And here's another indication of how good this kid is: He will swim next season at Stanford, one of the top swimming programs in the country.

Where Are They Now ???????????

* Former Quaker Valley point guard Amir Johnson is having a fine season at Division I Radford (Va.). He is averaging 13.6 points and 4.0 rebounds and 36 minutes a game.

* Former Laurel Highlands standout sprinter Breehana Jacobs is redshirting her first year at the University of South Carolina.
