Re: Who Is The best Player In the Westpac
He's 6'3" and from what i'be heard he still has a few inches to go. I know for a fact he's already been admitted to Coast Guard to play basketball....pats39 wrote:IS Jones tall, if not a highly doubt a SG in the westpac who may have averaged 16 points a game is getting recruited anywhere.
The reason he's looking around is becuase he doesnt want the military commitment. I also know for a fact that Billy Clapper of UPJ has agreed to look at him and may take him on as a recruit at UPJ. It would be harder for him to get on at a bigger school like IUP or UMBC becuase of the distance for a recreuting trip.
I think Jones's biggest problem is not his height, its his unselfishness. He never wants to know how many points he scores in a game becuase, frankly, the only thing he cares about is winning. He's a pass first player and, like you said, his PPG average might be a detriment to his recruiting prospects. His biggest asset, though, relating to that is his APG averages which is one of the highest for a CT player in the last few years. He's great at finding the open man and setting up good looks inside.
All in all though, he does have a lot of raw talent and has been playing since he was in grade school. I'm actually surprised that not many people on this board have heard of him. He does often get overshadowed by Duray's height and higher PPG average, but Jones is a household name in CT as far as high school sports goes. Any game you go to, people are chanting his name, cheering him on, etc..much the same or even more so than Duray.

I heard he actually did really well in the college scouting combine last weekend. His 40 times leaves something to be desired, but he has a good pocket presence. The reason he didnt impress anyone in his high school career is becuase he was on a 70/30 run/pass team and didnt get a lot of nods to show his throwing abilities.vikingz91 wrote:everyone speaks of matt durays college football aspirations, does he plan to play qb? because if he does that just might be a dream of his because i truely dont see that happening. ive watched the kid play numerous times and saw nothing special. maybe hes good but im not sure if i see him playing at the next level. by all means best of luck to him but...
I think he may be a better basketball player than a football player but the biggest issue is his height. 6'6" is good for high school basketball for a center, especially in D5...but 6'6" at Center would get dominated in college basketball. Whereas, on the other hand, 6'6" with a strong, accurate arm may be a perfect fit for a smaller D3 college football team.

Not sold on Matt Jones, would not know him from Adam and realize he is probably a great person. I watched him play a few times but cannot imagine him playing college basketball at some of the schools mentioned. 2007-08 Season Stats 29 games 62 assist, 64 turnovers, 10.0 PPG under 6 boards a game in the WestPAC??? They can chant your name all night long, it might impress a kids parents but I doubt a college recruiter. I wish Matt Jones the best and hope he does go on to the next level.

As i said earlier..he already is going on to the next level. You may be correct about his stats, but I know for a fact he's going to Coast Guard to play NCAA Division III basketball. The only reason he's looking at other schools is so he can play local.Prince Sidewinder wrote:Not sold on Matt Jones, would not know him from Adam and realize he is probably a great person. Re: Who Is The best Player In the Westpac
I went to see Shade and Blacklick Valley play on Monday and I would not discount the Holby kid from Blacklick as arguably being the best player in the WestPAC. He had to of had at least 14 points in the first half. Shade can really shoot the ball and they do play good team basketball.
I thought Shade could have called the dogs off a little earlier. I left with about 3:30 to go and Berkey, Kaminsky and Barnes were still on the floor and Shade was up about 30.
Luke Zellem from North Star appears to be unstoppable but I have not watched him play this season.

Like you said, Holby had 16 pt in the 1st half....it was a smart move for the Shade coach not to take the boys out too early....They needed to play good defense to keep Holby at bay.

I am going to have to say that Holby is a good Athlete, but as far a basketball he is not the best. Unless he has a straight line to the right side of the hoop on a fastbreak he is absolutely no threat. You have to grant either Zellum or Kaminsky that title, and as far as skills go Kaminsky definately beats Zellum.

Duray? Did he really improve that much from last season, when he didn't impress me at all? And now people are talking about playing college ball?
