3 point baskets

Post by wee wee »

We have been wondering about this the last few weeks. When did the 3 pointer become part of high school basketball?

I've always been curious when a kid breaks a school record since the three point shot was in, do they put an * beside it stating how many of these points were 3-point shots? It wouldn't be fair for someone who didn't play when there was a 3-point shot.

There are a number of things that have changed about the game that have effected the scoring statistics.

I was just talking to Mae Beth Schaulis the other day about the fact that my freshman year, we played 16 games at Ferndale...my sophomore year we played 20 which included 2 playoff games. Mae commented that during her Junior year when they made it to the state championship game, they played 32 games in one season.

Over the past years changes in the girls game including the 3 point shot, smaller ball and extended schedule have definately impacted the career statistical numbers for players.

Think about it...If you have good outside shooters, it's worth the risk to shoot a lot of threes...It's simple math...

If you shoot 50% from 3 point range (ex: 10 for 20), those 10 made shots get you 30 points...You would have to shoot a whopping 75% from 2 point range (15 for 20) to get the same number of points (30).

Even if you shoot 40% from 3-point range (ex: 8/20), you'd have to shoot 60% from 2 (12/20) to balance it out.

In short, if you have good outside shooters, it's worth the risk to shoot a large percentage of threes. If you shoot 40% or above from 3-pt territory, you're really ahead of the game.

The 3 has changed the game a great deal and has changed the way teams attack offensively and defend defensively...

NOW, PIAA...would you PLEASE implement a 35 second shot clock??? I'm tired of seeing final scores of games in the 30s and even the 20s, and tired of coaches holding the ball, then bragging about what great defense their team plays. What a joke. We saw what happened in college basketball in the 70s...Not having a shot clock almost ruined the game...I remember seeing Carolina winning games like 11-7. Disgraceful.

Kind of weird to think about that 3 pointers werent introduced into high school until the late 80s. What about the NBA and college? What years were those?
Well let me tell you, nLions1 is a big time friend of Janek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
