Team PA wins AAU Elementary National Wrestling Championship

Post by CITYBOY »

Team PA Gold Wins First Ever AAU Elementary Dual National Wrestling Dual Title

18 Teams from 11 States (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, and Tennessee) battled for the National Elementary Wrestling Title in Kingsport, Tennessee on April 3-5, 2009. Pennsylvania took two teams of the states’ best youth wrestlers; PA Blue and PA Gold.

Team PA Gold, coached by Mr. Patrick Worthing, went undefeated throughout the tournament (winning their pool of 6 teams and all 3 matches in the Gold Division bracket). They shut out 3 teams; Illinois Northstars 87:0, South Carolina 100:0 and Indy Elite Gold 90:0 and only allowed 1 win against North Carolina Red 95:4 and Chicago Fire 79:3. They beat Indiana Brawlers 60:23 in the semifinal round. Their toughest opponent was the defending National Champions (for the past 8 of 9 years), Iowa Black. They beat Iowa Black Friday night in pool play 40:37 and needed to face them again in the championship match to prove the first win was not a fluke. The PA Gold boys buckled down and stretched the margin with a 40:30 victory.

Team PA Blue also won their pool by beating Ohio Storm 92:3, Florida Hurricanes 86:3, Iowa Gold 58:18, Georgia Elite 58:24 and Indy Elite Blue 82:6. PA Blue beat Tennessee 64:38 and then lost to powerhouse Iowa Black 50:22 in the semi-final round. They won the rematch with Georgia Elite prior to losing their final match to Ohio Grapplers as they fought for third place.

Two Bedford County fifth graders competed in the 135 pound weight class for their respective teams. Conner Buttry of Chestnut Ridge was selected to wrestle for Team PA Gold and Mason Guyer of NBC was selected to wrestle for Team PA Blue. Conner went 6 and 2, pinning 4 of his opponents. Both of his loses were against the Iowa State Champ. He was awarded the Bronze All-American medal for his record. Mason went 3 and 6 to help his team win 4th place.

Conner will wrestle for Team PA Gold in at least one more tournament, the Ohio Tournament of Champions on April 25th.

It was a thrill for both boys to represent their state, their schools and Bedford County in a National Tournament. They would like to thank their coaches, their teammates and the community for their support.

Good job Conner.........I'll check out the TOC Team MD for Austin tonight at practice, and let you know. That will be fun for you if you have one boy on Team PA, and the other on Team MD!!! Their #60 is still iffy, so I may be calling McGill too.
