Attendance DOES matter. The money generated at the home games goes into a ton of university research. I do not have the book in Texas with me (it's back in PA) but they clear an insane amount of money per home game. That is why PSU cannot afford (literally) to give the HC duties to a bonehead when Joe leaves.
It pays for Cael Sanderson's salary, too. As far as them giving the Head Coaching duties to a bonehead when JoePoo leaves, that's going to be very interesting.

I'll take that bet. Then I will double or nothing that Pitt will have more at its Blue/Gold Basketball Game than Penn State has at any regular season basketball game that they are not giving away free hotdogs and pepsi.
