WT Good post, Glad to see your making a comeback on BC.

In defense of Ferndale football I feel they have a coach now that has interpersonal skills now. I don't know how good of a coach he is but I feel he relates well with the children.

In most cases the powers that be don't consider the relationship between a coach and the student-athletes and the parents. If you have a guy or girl who can relate communicate and still have total control of his or her program than you have a great coach.

The truth is school board hires that best fits what their idea of a good coach would be.."Friend or family member or someone who can benefit their needs".

When will these public school boards realize by hiring a candidate that is like by they parents or students it not only benefits the athletes but makes your job as board members a lot easier.

If my memory serves me correct I believe Roman Jr. Graduated from Johnstown Vo-Tech. Also what does Roman Jr. coaching Westmont have to do with Ferndale and its dismal athletic program?

.....who had the best girls team ever to grace the hardwood in Cambria County area handed to her. That team would have won 30 games without a coach. Westpac basketball prepared her well for big time high school hoops and really taught how to take control of her team with a second half 20 point lead in the state final a few years back. I felt so bad for those girls. Ferndale has had some good boys and girls hoop teams over the years but the level of competition has been terrible.

Ferndale should do the right thing and dissolve itself before it becomes so bad that kids can't learn to read and write, let alone compete in sports. The kids really do deserve better.

WPIAL -Is this post about Ferndale or Westmont??????

-Small enrollment, which leads to low particpation in athletics

-Inadequate budget

-Lack of facilities/Poor quality of facilities

-Micromanaging and narrowmindedness of some on the board of education

-Small time, small town politics

-Minimal support from some administration

-Weak leadership and lack of skill/understanding of kids from some coaches

-Meddling parents/community who believe they have all the answers

Any program can survive and even thrive if 1, 2, or maybe 3 of these factors are present...However any program having all 8 factors like Ferndale is a script for FAILURE.

Football in particular concerns me. I see their team losing games 50+/- to 0...Someone's going to get hurt.

Coaches having zero interpersonal skills and resorting to yelling and swearing to try to get control of kids is archaic approach, and unacceptable. If you can't outsmart and outthink a junior high/high school kid and have to resort to flippping out, what good are you as a coach anyway???

Once again...I'm not talking about Dave...I'm talking about Jodi.

I guess my response was based on the fact that you said lol...Ferndale athletics. If that is the case and Ferndale athletics was/is such a laughing stock...how the heck did Jodi ever emerge from such a lousy program to be such a good coach.

Psycho,

Once again basketball does go back further than the late 90's. When Jodi played at Ferndale we weren't playing shade and turkeyfoot. And regarding her being given a team with tremendous talent......someone had to bring that all together. You don't get to two state championships on talent alone.

:D I definitely agree, Jodi Hillegas is the best to come out of Ferndale in a long time both as a player and a coach.

Jodie is a pretty good coach and has to rank in the top half of the girls basketball coaches. I do like how she involves herself with the youth programs too. I don't know much about the Junior High Basketball coach at Ferndale however I do know they lost a few girls in that age bracket that were decent players. They didn't leave because of the coaching though they transferred to other schools because of the education benefits. It is hard for any any system when they no longer have good players in their system.

Maybe they should just merge that school district into Westmont, now lets hear all the Westmont parents complain about their kids not getting starting potions. That would be interesting wouldn't it?

When did being a good coach coordinate with having a rich athletic program? Dave and Jodi are good coaches for this area no doubt about it, but Ferndale athletics’ is a joke. Lets be honest Ferndale is an easy out in all sports and have been for sometime. In the last 30 years in all sports can we name the athletes that have received a college scholarship from Ferndale? It will be no more than 20. Can we name the winning seasons they have had in any sport I believe that would be less than 20 as well.

Championships, Wins, and advancement in programs student athletes is what makes a rich program not two people who are good coaches who went to Ferndale or lived in that neighborhood

Ferndale girls basketball has easily had 20 winning seasons in the past 30 years.

As far as a good player becoming a good coach, ask Jodi how many times she has spoken with her former coaches from Ferndale and asked fo advice. I would bet that Jodi would tell you that she learned things as a player at Ferndale that she has implemented in her system at Westmont.

Sorry but I take offense when someone disrespects the Ferndale school district. I guess my bigger question is why the Ferndale hate?
