Re: Same Old Song
The Portage "staff" is second to none in this area. These guys work hard all year long; in the weight room, speed training, passing leagues, camps, clinics, combines, etc. Commitment. Coaching is definitely a collaborative effort at Portage, more of a "shared leadership" of sorts.
Portage has one of the most successful, small school football programs in the state. No one can argue that fact. To maintain the success Portage has had over the last 15 years or so, things must be going right.
However, the Mustangs beat, who we "old heads" believe they should beat, year in and year out. All of us who played before the early 1990s, tangled with Forest Hills, McCort, Penn Cambria, Central Cambria, etc., etc. on a yearly basis. Quite a different level of competition.

Re: Same Old Song
Portage was smart to stop playing the PCs, CCs, McCorts, and FHs of the world.
They'd be catching 3-4 viscious beatings every year of they still had the schedules of yesteryear. As a footnote in support of this assertion, please see 42-7 loss to McCort last year, circa November, 2008.
I remember the Portage team that was unbeaten 8-0-2 in the early 80s...Well, Penn Cambria actually beat them that year, except the official called a pass that bounced 2 yards in front of the receiver a catch on a 4th and 15 play from midfield that kept Portage's "winning drive" alive with less than 1:00 left and PC ahead 13-12. Ask Corky or Gousey about that one. I saw the videotape and I'm sure they did too...the ball even splashed up water as it bounced, before it was caught. One of the top 3 worst calls I have ever seen. The ref ran in waving his arms immediately calling it a catch...He had to be shaving points.

Yeah, I'll stand by my claim (maybe I should add REAL D-1 players) despite CC67 and PAlum...Dfense wins games wrote:They have something Portage does not, at least one D-1 player, or two, or three. Usually in the backfield and also on the line.Prince Sidewinder wrote: As for the run only offense, I watch teams who go deep into the playoffs and even the championship teams who run, run, run.
Notice the part where he says "teams who go deep into the playoffs and even the championship teams"
Yeah, it is BECAUSE they have the players to do so, nothing else. BM hasn't gone "deep into the playoffs" since 2001, when they had a killer line, but even then, they didn't have the talent to beat the Washington Prixes- who DID HAVE Dan Mozes went to West Virginia, where he became a consensus All-America center, Travis Thomas started on offense and defense in addition to being a special teams captain at Notre Dame, and ANOTHER 1,000 yard rusher in J.R. Ward.
BUT, D1 players are seldom seen on TV and on teams that go deep into the playoffs...

Real D1 players, how many did steel high have last year? Or Tyrone In 2004? Or Grove City in 2004? Worst argument ever. BAll players play it doesnt matter if they are d1 or d3.

No offense by this, but I do not think Portage has a D1 player on the team. They have some very good players but I do not see a big time D1 player. It was rumored that Sinosky was being looked at by Cincinnati but I am not sure for what position. He cannot play back in college and he does not have the speed to play wideout. Any other opinions, and again an opinion.

Re: Same Old Song
DWG why even play the game? If Richland doesnt have any players. Its no wonder people on here hate McCort jackasses like you bring it own themselves. When they knocked off Mccort a few years ago who did they have that Mccort didnt? How about in 2002 when Mccort lost to Central? Better yet when Mccort lost to CC in 2003?
