B10 return to prominence in 2010-11? / PSU Breakdown.

B10 return to prominence in 2010-11? / PSU Breakdown.
Michigan is a young team with tons of promise. Ohio State is a young team. Penn State is a young team. Those are the 3 top programs in the conference, and there are $$$$$ everywhere at that wet dream of income. The Big Ten wanted these 3 to be the top tier of the conference when they expanded to include Penn State. 47 years later, PSU is finally learning how to recruit and play in a conference. Is 2011 the year the 3 programs reach the potential the B10 had hoped for, with all 3 being top ranked teams and the national spotlight on the 3 of them? It very well might happen.
Would be nice if Wildcat could breakdown OSU. I'll try to get Chico to breakdown Michigan, since I know he is "always very busy" at work to say the least.

OFFENSIVE NOTES FOR 2010:

QB:
- Lions lose Clark to graduation and will break in a new QB in 2010. That job will be between Paul Jones and Robert Bolden (both true freshmen) or sophomore Kevin Newsome. Newsome has made a lot of progress since January, so I would assume he's the starter barring a meltdown in the offseason.
RB:
- It is looking like Royster will be back, from where I am sitting. That's great news for the Lions, but Green has finally been playing well and not playing tentatively when hitting holes. I am a big critic of his, but he has played well against Iowa and Illinois, back to back. Carter will also be back and so is Beachum, and to be honest, I don't know why the hell Beachum isn't getting reps this season, because I think he's better than Green. FB Joe Suhey has become an integral part of this offense, and he also returns.
WR:
- All 3 starting WRs return and midway through 2009, they are all doing better than expected. Moye has bigtime potential, as does Powell. Zuggernaut is a great 3rd receiver and has really gotten a lot better w/ his routes. Devon Smith has seen a good bit of action as a true freshman so far, and Curtis Drake has seen time as well w/ the starters. Brackett also returns, and although he can't catch worth a (EXPLETIVE) he is a tremendous downfield blocker, and done a lot so far for the offense.
TE:
- Quarless and Shuler are both gone at the end of the season, which is sad news, but all reports about Szczerba is absolutely ready to play. Wedderburn was really sick in the offseason and lost a bunch of weight, but he'll also see time. I would not be surprised if true freshman Kevin Haplea gets into this rotation in 2010. Gary Gilliam was a Parade All-American and could also see time if he is not used at DE.
T:
- Landolt and McCormack will be gone after this season. McCormack was in a heated offseason battle w/ Pannell for the RT slot and lost initially, but has since taken over the RT duties. Pannell has a ton of potential but is not quite strong enough yet. Redshirt freshman Eric Shrive will greatly push for a starting spot, and I think he'll get it.
C:
- Wisniewski was moved from G to C to fill the void, but things did not go as smoothly as everyone had hoped. He's doing okay, but not great. In his defense, he looked way, way better in the Illinois game, in terms of ball delivery. His snaps were high, low, slow, but it seems like he is catching on now. I do not believe they will move him back to G for next season, because the only kid who I can conceivably see getting time at C will be a true freshman. Howle is not there yet, and Klopacz doesn't have much faith from the fans who have seen him.
G:
- This is quickly becoming a strength for the Lions in 2009, let alone 2010. Troutman was in Paterno's doghouse and lost the offseason battle to Stankiewitch. Well, he was manhandled and ineffective even against Syracuse and Temple, so Troutman took over and has before well since. He is the most physical lineman on the roster and even played well against Iowa. Eliades has been playing pretty well all season, and had his best game against Illinois so far. The G's are both getting better each week.
DEFENSIVE NOTES FOR 2010:

DE:
- Both Crawford and Lattimore are new starters in 2009 and have fared better than expected, which is a real testament to Larry Johnson, who lost both DEs and the best DE backup after 2008. Lattimore replaced Latham, who started in the first game of the season, and Latham has seen nothing but limited duty since. They've found their starters. All 3 have 2 years of eligibility remaining. A surprise at DE has been true freshman Sean Stanley, who caused a big fumble against Illinois. Stanley has not played much, so I did not list him as "significant playing time" but he'll see a lot more action after his game versus Illinois.
DT:
- Odrick is an all-conference candidate who has done well despite numerous double-teams this season. Unfortunately, he will be graduating. Ogbu has done okay but is not setting the world on fire. Devon Still has bulked up significantly and has seen time this season, but it will be interesting to see if they move him into Odrick's spot or not. If not, it could open up the door for a true freshman. Odrick's current backup is James Terry, who has 3 more years eligibilty. Not sure if that 1 year of "experience" is enough to grant Terry special preference over kids who might be enrolling in January. This battle at the DT spot should be very interesting.
OLB:
- There have been rumors since 2008 that Navarro Bowman might leave early for the NFL, but that could go either way following Bowman's missed time due to injury. Assuming he stays, he'll return as an all-american candidate and a sure starter. Opposite him... that is a toss-up. The conservative approach would be to put Colasanti at MLB and start Michael Mauti opposite Bowman. Mauti (3) was a starter in the offseason before getting injured and having to skip the entire 2009 campaign. Nate Stupar has also gotten a lot of experience this season so far, as has Bani Gdabyu. If Bowman leaves, there's a plethora of experience to go around this LB corps, even with Lee and Hull leaving as well.
MLB:
- Josh Hull departs this season, a starter for all of 2008 and all of 2009 thus far. Hull has played much better this season, and played very well against Illinois. The injuries PSU has been hit with at LB have forced the staff to remove Chris Colasanti's redshirt. Colasanti will enter his final year of eligibility in 2010 with experience and as the heir apparent to take over inside. That will all be up in the air though, as this team has incredible LB depth. Colasanti needs to work on his footspeed, the same issue Hull has been hearing about for 2 seasons. Would not be surprised if Mike Zordich (3) made a strong push here for the starting spot.
CB:
- After 2008, both CBs departed. The new starters were Knowledge Timmons and AJ Wallace. They are now battling eachother for ONE CB spot, due to the great play of D'Anton Lynn thus far. Lynn figures to hold his position the rest of the season, which means the Lions will only replace one CB slot in 2010.... that is, if Morris doesn't take the other spot from the two battling seniors. If you want my opinion, I think he will eventually. Others think Wallace and Timmons are doing fine, but I am not sold on either and never have been. Morris has been playing very well in the time he has been on the field, and is aggressive and phsyical. Those are two qualities PSU fans have not seen in a CB in years. Lynn can be both as well, and is technically very good, but needs to start making plays. As of now, he is shutting down his man but not causing any ruckus. That will come with time.
SS:
- Nick Sukay has been starting for 5 games w/ really no previous experience. Sukay has been up and down, every game. He is physical, aggressive, but is sometimes out of position. That comes with experience. A year from now, he'll be a star on this defense if he can hold off Gerald Hodges (3). Cedric Jeffries will also be vying for time in 2010 with his last season of eligibility. Jefferies has not done much in his time at Penn State, but is listed as 2nd on the depth chart.
FS:
- Drew Astorino is another new starter on this defense. He has played pretty well so far, but is not setting any world records. He's been essentially splitting time with Andrew Dailey, but Astorino seems to be the clear starter. Both have 2 years of eligibility remaining after 2009.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES FOR 2010:

K:
- Colin Wagner has struggled in 2009 so far and is not getting the ball deep enough on kickoffs. This is causing a lot of problems with the kick coverage unit, and is an ongoing issue for the team. He has 1 more season after this, and will be pushed by Anthony Fera (3) who was the 2nd best K in the country according to Scout. Why Fera is not kicking off, I have not the slighest idea. Wagner's FGs are also erratic but he'll calm down... in theory.
P:
- Jeremy Boone is in his final season as a Nit and is having a great year. His backup is untested Ryan Breen, who will enter 2010 w/ 2 remaining seasons.
As you can see, 2011 could shape up to be a great run, but 2010 could be a nice one as well if they get any consistency from the QB position.

I heard they were redshirting Fera. I don't know why they wouldn't he isn't playing.

Offensive notes:
QB - Terrelle Pryor will be back at least in 2010. He has no capable backup right now. I am hoping that the QB recruit they are bringing in next year pans out. It is Kent Graham's son, so he has a pedigree, but that might not matter.
RB - They are loaded here. Herron and Saine are both back. I think Saine is the better of the two as he is bigger, faster and seems fully recovered from his injuries. Jordan Hall has been getting more time as the year has gone along. Jamaal Berry was supposed to be great, but he is being redshirted. Roderick Smith is supposed to be great coming in next year.
WR - They are loaded here as well. Sanzenbacher and Posey are back next year. I look for Duron Carter to get more and more opportunities. Posey is really starting to become a star. Losing Ray Small will not really hurt. Taurian Washington has a good spring, but has not had many opportunities with the emergence of Carter. Lamaar Thomas is still being used primarily as a kick returner.
TE - Jake Ballard will be gone. Jake Stoneburner will take his place. Ballard is a better blocker, but Stoneburner is a better receiver.
OL - Cordle will be a tough loss, but this unit is very young. Adams or Shugarts will probably step into Cordle's spot. Boren and Brewster are great. Browning is not. I could see Shugarts taking his spot next year. Marcus Hall is getting some time now. He could be a starter next year at tackle as well.
DL - The 2009 edition is the best I can remember. The top linemen - Hayward, Gibson, and Larimore - are scheduled to return next year, but I could see either or both going pro. Simon and Williams are good and will see more time next year. The losses are significant because it will take away the quality depth that makes this year's line great.
LB - Spitler will be gone, but Tyler Moeller will be back from his injury. If he cannot go next year, Klein or Sweat will step into that spot. I expect it to be Klein. Homan has been solid again and Brian Rolle is establishing himself as one of the best in the Big 10. I would be surprised if he was not All- Big 10 this year.
DB - Coleman will be a big loss, and Johnson will probably step into that spot. Hines is a good safety, especially against the run. Chukwa is a tough corner and Torrence has been very good. I think the fact that he did not play baseball this summer really helped him.
ST - OSU will have a new kicker adn punter next year. Tressel always has good special teams, but next year will be his biggest test.
I think 2010 will be a really good year for the Buckeyes. 2011 doesn't look as good, but it is still pretty far in the future.

Offensive notes:
QB - Terrelle Pryor will be back at least in 2010. He has no capable backup right now. I am hoping that the QB recruit they are bringing in next year pans out. It is Kent Graham's son, so he has a pedigree, but that might not matter.
RB - They are loaded here. Herron and Saine are both back. I think Saine is the better of the two as he is bigger, faster and seems fully recovered from his injuries. Jordan Hall has been getting more time as the year has gone along. Jamaal Berry was supposed to be great, but he is being redshirted. Roderick Smith is supposed to be great coming in next year.
WR - They are loaded here as well. Sanzenbacher and Posey are back next year. I look for Duron Carter to get more and more opportunities. Posey is really starting to become a star. Losing Ray Small will not really hurt. Taurian Washington has a good spring, but has not had many opportunities with the emergence of Carter. Lamaar Thomas is still being used primarily as a kick returner.
TE - Jake Ballard will be gone. Jake Stoneburner will take his place. Ballard is a better blocker, but Stoneburner is a better receiver.
OL - Cordle will be a tough loss, but this unit is very young. Adams or Shugarts will probably step into Cordle's spot. Boren and Brewster are great. Browning is not. I could see Shugarts taking his spot next year. Marcus Hall is getting some time now. He could be a starter next year at tackle as well.
DL - The 2009 edition is the best I can remember. The top linemen - Hayward, Gibson, and Larimore - are scheduled to return next year, but I could see either or both going pro. Simon and Williams are good and will see more time next year. The losses are significant because it will take away the quality depth that makes this year's line great.
LB - Spitler will be gone, but Tyler Moeller will be back from his injury. If he cannot go next year, Klein or Sweat will step into that spot. I expect it to be Klein. Homan has been solid again and Brian Rolle is establishing himself as one of the best in the Big 10. I would be surprised if he was not All- Big 10 this year.
DB - Coleman will be a big loss, and Johnson will probably step into that spot. Hines is a good safety, especially against the run. Chukwa is a tough corner and Torrence has been very good. I think the fact that he did not play baseball this summer really helped him.
ST - OSU will have a new kicker adn punter next year. Tressel always has good special teams, but next year will be his biggest test.
I think 2010 will be a really good year for the Buckeyes. 2011 doesn't look as good, but it is still pretty far in the future.

Great write up. I think OSU will start 2010 as the #1 team in the nation, barring a lot of early entries.
I dunno if you've been following OSU's recruiting, but if they can land some of the kids they supposedly lead for, OSU and PSU could both have top 5 classes. That's huge for the B10. It will also be huge for the B10 if OSU lands Seantrel Henderson, whom they supposed lead for. He's the #1 player in the nation on Scout. Imagine if PSU lands Lattimore and Floyd! (5-star RB and 5-star DT)

TAE, we actually agree for once. OSU will have a small class next year because they don't lose much, but they are after some big recruits. I am coming around to feeling like PSU and OSU will be the top two in the Big 10 for the next 3-5 years and I am actually excited about it. I can't stand Rodriguez, so if Michigan stays down, I won't be upset, even though it will diminish the OSU-MIC rivalry a bit.

I am hoping PSU can knock off Ohio State this season, because I do not think PSU is overly good this year but they are aided by the fact that the B10 is a little down. Beating OSU would give them 3 wins over them in 5 seasons. That would be great for the B10.
As much as we both hate Michigan, we need to root for them in every game other than Ohio State and Penn State, respectively.
If the B10 can get PSU, OSU, and UM all on pretty equal footing... That would be wonderful for the conference.
Penn State, at last report, has 23 available scholarships for this incoming class. Next year should be about the same.
