Windber’s Rasko signs with Fairmont State

Monday, November 16, 2009

WINDBER — While official practices for high school basketball season don’t start until Friday, Windber standout Jen Rasko already decided where she’ll play next year in college.

Rasko signed a letter of intent on Monday to further her education and play women’s basketball at N.C.A.A. Division II Fairmont State University in West Virginia.

“I wanted to sign early to take some of the pressure off and just concentrate on playing basketball (this season),” said Rasko, who plans to major in Elementary Education.

“I visited the campus in the summer and coach (Steve) McDonald welcomed me with open arms. ... It felt right to me and it just clicked.”

During her career at Windber, the 5-foot-9 senior guard earned West-PAC all-conference honors as a sophomore and a junior, as well as being named to the All-Somerset County team in her two years at the varsity level.

Rasko’s junior season was cut short last year when she broke her wrist in January. Prior to that, she was averaging more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game.

She was first noticed by Fairmont State coaches at an A.A.U. tournament this past summer in Gettysburg.

“Coach McDonald and I were talking and we both agreed that Jen is the complete package,” Windber coach Rich Price said. “She can play all five positions. I think her best asset is her vision on the court. Everybody always talks about her scoring and rebounding, but her passing and vision on the court is what separates her from most players.”

Fairmont State has done well in the nine years McDonald has been the head coach, including an 18-11 mark last season while competing in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Price predicts that Rasko will succeed at the next level, both on the court and in the classroom.

“Jen has the tools and the work ethic,” he said. “She really puts a lot of time into basketball. She loves the game. I think she’s going to be a real asset to Fairmont State. She’s an honor student in addition to being a great athlete.”
