I like how Titan just thinks that posting stuff on here makes it fact. I could easily say that Pitt gives their student athletes cheat sheets and attendance isn't required but I have no way to back that up. Just as you don't Titan. Show us where these majors are "watered down". I have some friends up here in some of these so called "watered-down" programs and they don't seem so watered down to me. You really can't believe have the $hit that comes out of your month on a daily basis here. Until you show proof of how these programs are made easier for athletes your points hold no credibility. Of course we're use to that.

Why is it Penn State's fault that they game that D5 athlete a 4 year scholarship and he failed to get a degree?

Let me say this though: Even if they ARE watered down majors, they are still graduating frpm a great school. The same can be said about Pitt, etc. Getting that degree... any degree... will open up a lot of doors. When I worked at Fidelity, the places you can go within the company are essentially endless. But you MUST have a degree... any 4-year degree... to get hired.

And those majors are not just for kids who play football. Regular students go to PSU for that stuff. It IS an agricultural school, ya know. You know, plants, etc.

"TAE, I want to hear a cogent line of reasoning that can convince me that PSU's high graduation rate is the result of academic rigor, and not as a result of watered down "rocks for jocks" programs like Travel/Tourism, Parks and Recreation, and Turf Management Science. Those programs are designed for borderline students. Virtually every football player majors in programs such as these, which are designed for the purpose of getting students through college. To use your argument, just like full stadiums generate money, programs like these generate $$$ for the University so that marginal students who can't even tie their shoes and write a coherent sentence can say they received a college degree...They also generate artificial and inflated graduation rates, which you poor Nitters use to try to mitigate the damage done by the weekly police blotter.

PSU's admissions standards are "high", higher than Pitt's, so high that they wouldn't take Shady McCoy? So high that they wouldn't take Jon Baldwin, Larry Fitzgerald, Rod Rutherford? Keep telling yourself that and keep listening to your "inside sources" about Shady's recruitment. Mmm, KOOL AID tastes good, doesn't it? PSU fails to land quality recruits, then they fall back on the excuse that "Our institution is so rigorous that we could NEVER accept such poor academic performance." WHAT A JOKE. It is reasoning like that is all part of the PSU brainwashing and prevailing arrogance (which is actually deleriousness) throughout those who are part of or even just fans of the PSU football program. YOU GUYS ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT STUFF.

Let's not even talk about the "high standards" at the 50 or so PSU BRANCH CAMPUSES around the Commonwealth. High standards at PSU-Mount Alto and PSU-Behrend, and PSU-Great Valley, and PSU-New Ken...YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

Whenever you make allegations that Penn State's academic standards for athletes is "watered-down" the burden of proof is on you. There is nothing for PSU supporters to answer to until you show me where the academic rigors is easier for athletes, which you have not.

That would be like a PSU supporter saying:

Pitt athlete's don't have to take finals or attend class. Pitt has an exception for athletes that raises their final grade in courses. Most of the football players at Pitt are given a personal tutor. Pitt degrees are made for athletes. Prove me wrong Titan.

What does that article have to do with academics???? It's a study on how many athletes enter school, and eventually graduate. Kids can leave a program for a myriad of reasons, from death of a parent, to leaving early for the NBA. Students quit school. That's a fact. You can't equate academic standards with the number of athletes that ENROLL in a program and fail to receive a diploma 4 or 5 years later.

PSU has very few football players transfer because of the stability that The Great One provides, plus they don't transfer and certainly are rarely, if ever, held accountable or dismissed from the team (see DEPTH CHART JUSTICE) because they know they can get away with felonious acts with absolutely zero repercussions. Meanwhile, players at Pitt who continually violate University and team policy are gone. Talk to me about the dozens of Navorro Bowmans PSU has had, which The Great One has kept with the program. THAT DIRECTLY AFFECTS THESE STATS TOO, although I am not sure how good a Crim degree is going to do for a guy like Navorro Bowman, who has a rap sheet as long as Montana...

With that said, PSU's 78% grad rate for football players, compared with Pitt's 67% rate, isn't all that impressive. If a given senior class has 25 players in it, PSU graduates roughly 19-20, while Pitt graduates 17. That's two more players. Heck, if Joe throws Navorro and a few others who deserve it off the team (Please don't make me print "The List" again), they're grad rates are the same as Pitt's are...WHAT A JOKE!

I would actually expect PSU's grad rates to be FURTHER AHEAD of Pitt than they are, given the stability of the coaching staff and program there, while Pitt has had less stability in terms of coaches, etc.

All of this, coupled with PSU's laughable academic standards and diploma mill type "academic" programs leads to higher grad rates.

Thus, this post about PSU having such "great graduation rates" FURTHER PROVES MY POINT!!!
