My annual playoff scenario...

I use the BCS standings and put the 16 teams in based on that. These would be the matchups and brackets heading into this final week.

That said, as I get older, I love the college football does it this way. As a Steeler fan, I never really felt like we were the best team after winning Super Bowl 40. I always wanted to see my squad win it, but from the 6th seed it just didn't seem as great. The year before when they were 15-1 or whatever in the regular season before bowing out to the Pats in the AFC Championship game, they seemed more deserving of the champion title. To see New England go undefeated all the way to the Super Bowl and lose one game...it just seemed crappy. They were the best team. College basketball...yeah, I love that tournament and it is exciting as all get out, but how often does the best team win? How much does the regular season matter at all? You can lose every game, win your conference tournament, and you are dancing. An entire offseason and season depend on ONE game.

Anyway, I'd support nothing more than a 16 team playoff and would really prefer an 8 team one... here we go. This can and will change after this week.

Guess what, I'm projecting it just like it likely will come out. But it would be a lot of fun to watch these games. I think it would really hurt teams like Cincy, TCU, and Boise. I think those teams can beat ANYONE in one game. If they had to do it three or four straight, I don't think it would happen right now.

I would think that if they ever went to a playoff, they would have procedural rules preventing teams from the same conference from meeting for at least one round. This would necessitate a swap in the Iowa/OSU game.

I like an 8 team scenario but it could be expanded a bit using the first and second weekends in December as Play-Ins or Conference Championship Games.

The winners of the major conferences that have Championship Games deserve and have earned more than the other conferences a spot in the quarterfinals anyway.

So....ACC, Big 12, and SEC winners get seeded and placed in New Years Day Bowls used as Quarterfinals.

Other Conferences including non-bcs conference champions must
play their way in either 1st or 2nd week in Dec.

Using this year as an example it might look like this

ACC Champ to Orange Bowl, SEC Champ to Sugar Bowl, Big 12 Champ to Fiesta Bowl

5 Play-In games

WAC (Boise) vs PAC-10 (Oregon) on Dec. 12 for Rose Bowl Bid
Big 10 (Ohio St.) vs Sun Belt (Troy--yea I know, shame to put them in but until NCAA makes them I-AA every conf. champ deserves a spot) for other Rose Bowl spot
Big East (Cinci or Pitt) vs C-USA Champ for Sugar Bowl spot
MAC vs Wild Card #1 (Alabama/Fla loser) for Orange Bowl spot
MW (TCU) vs Wild Card #2 (Texas if they would lose, or Cinci, or ?) for Fiesta Bowl spot

Quarterfinals on New Years Day
Sugar Bowl Florida over Cinci or Pitt
Orange Bowl Alabama over ACC Champ
Fiesta Bowl TCU over ?
Rose Bowl Ohio State or Oregon

Semifinals and finals to follow week and 2-weeks later....you get the picture

And as a side note since someone mentioned the ncaa hoops tourney...if they wanted a true champion they would go to a double elimination tournament...anyone can have a bad night and/or get upset once. Just my opinion...but that would screw up TV probably and TV does run that show as we all know.

I hate seeing the duds in there. Football isn't hoops and those teams can't play with the big boys. I'm still a fan of the 16 or 8 based on BCS rankings.

Yeah I agree but also there needs to be some kind of rule that allows "good" non-BCS teams into the pot. This year if it is a 8 or 16 I think that both Boise and TCU deserve a shot (especially if there are 16 teams). We all know that there would be a rule that if ND won like 8 games they would automatically get in. I like the 8 team bracket with each BCS conference champion getting in, save 1 for a non-BCS school, and the final one should go to the highest rated BCS team that wasn't eligible. That means that this year it would look like this. Seeds should be set by the BCS rating and the wildcard always should have the 8th seed. So it would be over quickly yet enough teams would know how to earn the right to play in it.

1. Florida/'Bama winner (SEC Champ) vs. Florida/Bama loser (Wildcard)
2. Texas (assuming they would beat Nebraska) vs. ACC Champ
3. TCU (highest non-BCS team) vs. Ohio State
4. Cincy (if not pitt) vs. Oregon

This system would put a lot of focus in winning your conference because that is all that needs to be done to be in the final 8. I feel a system like this will encourage teams to play tough non-conference games to prepare themselves for the conference race (because a non-conference loss will not eliminate teams from the national title like it does now).

Also I think that any team that isn't in this list really doesn't have an argument for being national champions (except maybe Boise). I don't like a 16 team bracket because I don't think that teams like PSU, VT, Big East 2nd place team, Iowa, LSU, or BYU deserve to play for the national title.
