2009-2010 TIDES Graduation Report.
Of the 68 teams that are going bowling this year, only 15 graduate 75% or more of their players. That's 1 out of every 4 student-athletes that does not graduate.
I use 75% because I am giving the benefit of the doubt to these programs. It really should be 85%, but we'll be gentle when dealing with these coaches and adminstrations, which are all delicate geniuses.
It is my opinion that the coaching staff and the university have an obligation to strengthen in the minds of these players what an opportunity they have in front of them. In the vast majority of cases, this is not being conveyed. The staff and the university are not being held as accountable as they should be. We are dealing with 18-22 year old kids, we cannot expect them all to be wise enough and mature enough to understand their academic opportunity.
About 5% of all student-athletes make it professionally in their respective sport. The rest will get jobs like the rest of us, working for a living. Having that diploma opens an endless amount of doors, regardless of areas of study, as opposed to not having one.
The NCAA should be holding these universities to task. The graduation numbers for the 2009-2010 bowl teams show astounding incompetence and in many cases, failure.

CONGRATULATIONS, MIKE STOOPS AND BOB STOOPS!!!!!!!!!!

Mikey:
For the 2nd year in a row, Mikey has had a banner graduation season. 41% OVR stayed the same, his white players went down 6%, but his black grad rate DID rise 4%, thank Christ he has cleared the 30% mark. Will wonders never cease? And people think this guy deserves a contract extension.

Bobby:
Anyone who seriously figured this dunce was Notre Dame material need look no further than this: 45% OVR, 43% black, 47% white. If you can’t even graduate half your players in either demographic, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Re: 2009-2010 TIDES Graduation Report.
What are the MAIN reasons for athletes not graduating. That is, what are the main reasons that a kid entering an athletic program as a true freshman does not graduate 4 or 5 years later?

Re: 2009-2010 TIDES Graduation Report.
I dont think theres a main reason, I think theres a few equal reasons. Transfers, early entries, trouble, academics, etc. That's why I was giving them the benefit of the doubt and saying 75% should be the low-water mark.
