So how do you explain the race factor when it comes to girls basketball in District 6? Across the state, District 6 is known for girls basketball...period. Boys basketball is a joke. Football is extremely weak compared to the rest of the state. Softball and baseball are horrendous. Wrestling, track, cross country, and girls volleyball are respectable at times. District 6 is represented statewide by girls basketball, it has been that way for nearly 30 years.

Haha seriously? Last time i checked d6 football had 2 teams in the state championship this year in state college and mccort. Forest hills also lost in the state quarterfinals by 1 point to the defending state champs.

d6 football might be the second best district in the state behind the wpial. gotta love local people who hate on the local teams...

D6 is very strong in both baseball and softball. Didn't Homer-Center, State College, and Somerset just make the state title game in baseball in recent years? central mountain got far as well. forget how far. In softball, in addition to philipsburg and bea's state titles, northern cambria has 2 final four appearances in the last decade. bg has one. bellefonte was contender in aaa. other teams have made late runs as well.

d6 volleyball is very strong as well. nc has two state titles, huntingdon has 1. nc has two more finals appearances. huntingdon has at least one. state college was one of premier aaa teams several years ago. can think of at least 5 more final 4 appearances amongst d6 teams.

still cant get over lakers post LOL

as if it all comes down to skin color and has nothing to do with the community/way of life...Once again A)our schools are small enough and wrestling is HUGE in our area , B) lack of AAU and other structured boys basketball and ill throw in C) Kids are too busy playing PS3 and facebooking than to go out and play pickup ball. Windber comes to mind, used to be pick up games at Delany and Windber Recreation Park all the time, not so much anymore. And look and what windbers basketball has turned into

I'll agree with the pick up game point pats,I used to be able to play all summer long about 15 years ago over here in bedford county.Heck now you are lucky to see anyone playing at the courts once a month!

Who was the last white, American born NBA player to start a game? Does anyone even know? Keep trying to believe race is not a factor. White Americans make up the majority of highschool basketball players, but are by FAR the minority in college and pros.. and you think race has NOTHING to do with it? Take your shades off buddy.. it's 2010.. we can stop being sensitive to these subjects now that we have a black leader.

chris kaman -- all-star clipper
david lee -- all-star knick
troy murphy -- very solid pacer
brad miller and kirk hinrich - bulls
steve blake - very solid blazer
kevin love - timberwolves

3 of the top 4 Single A schools this year are all-white or mostly-white teams. there are many other all-white or mostly white teams that are at the top of the state. just last year, all 4 schools in the western semis in Single had predominantly white teams. its not like over the last few years, the top teams have been all black at all. with the addition of d12 to piaa, there now are more though.

many communities in d6 are traditionally much more into football and baseball (and in some spots wrestling). you also have the fact that very few schools have traveled to play top-notch competition (top 5-10 schools). if you look at the girls sports successes, you repeatedly see teams traveling to play not just quality competition but some of the best in the state. westmont girls bball and n cambria girls vball come to mind. and then you have aau, which has not been as advanced on the boys side but I believe is trying to get picked up now.

having said all this, d6 can field a top team. just a couple years ago, bishop guilfoyle had a legit shot to make the finals and win but they gave up a pretty big lead at the end of their early-round game and lost to the eventual champion (or runner-up I forget). blairsville had that great semifinal run (and they lost to elk county catholic).

sure Lakers, genetics(race) plays a big part of it, but definitely is not the ONLY factor. It all comes down to the fact that the communties a lot of blacks live in and grow up in are MUCH better for basketball development. To simple say our area is not good in basketball because we are not black enough is stupid, naive, and uneducated. Also, just because a black man represents us does not mean hes leading us anywhere

Sorry I started this. How did congratulating girls for achieving turn into an excuse session for the pitiful state of boys basketball in D6? Competition and the will to achieve breed excellence. Sitting in a nice cushy home playing video game and flirting with girls on facebook doesn't give kids much incentive to get outside on the playgrounds. What are we becoming?

Why is there no boys AAU in our area? With the sad uncompetitive state of most high school basketball programs AAU is for sure what brought the girls game to where it is today. Why do the girls find time to play outside the season and improve their skills but the boys do not?
